President Donald Trump’s tariffs represent one of the largest middle-class tax increases in modern history, driving up prices contrary to his promises. Now, new tariffs threaten to destabilize an economy already beset by uncertainty due to Trump’s unpredictable policies, assaults on the rule of law, and alarming rhetoric.
Compounding these issues, Trump and his MAGA supporters narrowly passed the “Big Beautiful Bill Act” in the House of Representatives. This divisive legislation primarily favors the ultra-rich, proposing massive tax cuts while inflicting severe cuts to essential healthcare and food services, thus burdening future generations with crippling debt. Just after the bill’s passage, Trump announced additional tariffs that are likely to kill jobs and further inflate costs.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump vowed that inflation would end “immediately” and claimed that Americans would witness falling prices on “Day One.” For millions of potential swing voters, these assurances were pivotal in their decision-making process. However, as prices rise, economic growth stagnates, and life for many has become more challenging than when Trump assumed office.
Since Inauguration Day, consumer sentiment has hit historic lows, and for the first time in over a century, Moody’s downgraded America’s credit rating. Major corporations like Ford and Walmart have begun raising prices due to the tariffs.
Instead of propelling economic growth as he promised, Trump’s economic policies have overwhelmingly benefited his Mar-a-Lago associates through favorable tax arrangements. The president, who claimed he would disrupt the establishment, appears to be reallocating taxpayer funds to enrich a select group of elites while neglecting the needs of middle-class families and American businesses.
At a time when the American economy was thriving globally, it is now falling behind at an alarming rate. The tariffs intended to bolster the U.S. manufacturing sector are inadvertently penalizing the very manufacturers they claim to support. For example, in North Carolina, new tariffs have hindered a local manufacturer’s ability to expand operations and hire additional workers, with the business noting that importing new machinery is now financially unfeasible.
In Michigan, the automotive industry is feeling the impacts of these policies. Suppliers and manufacturers are grappling with increased costs, resulting in supply chain disruptions. Businesses, including small retailers, report rising costs for goods due to tariff-induced price hikes. Families striving to purchase essential items find prices becoming increasingly prohibitive.
The Murrays, owners of a baby supply store in Ferndale, Michigan, express concern that 80% of their inventory is sourced from China. They fear either pricing themselves out of the market or facing stock shortages due to escalating tariffs. This MAGA agenda undermines essential economic security for average Americans, stripping them of both their purchasing power and job opportunities.
Trump’s financial strategies involve billions in cuts to critical programs like Medicaid and Medicare. As health coverage for millions faces cancellation, this undermines the social safety net essential for many families. Furthermore, food relief programs such as SNAP risk drastic reductions, further exacerbating the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
Pro-growth initiatives like the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, aimed at fostering job creation and energy efficiency, are facing continuous setbacks. These obstacles are felt equally in both red and blue states, leading to frustration among citizens from all political affiliations.
From Detroit autoworkers to farmers in South Dakota, Americans are increasingly aware of their declining circumstances in the wake of these policies. Bi-partisan voices across the nation agree that unless there is a collective response to surging inflation, stagnating growth, and escalating debt, average citizens will continue to struggle. To emphasize these challenges, a new initiative called the Cost Coalition aims to humanize the fight for the American Dream.
This coalition highlights the stories of hard-working Americans struggling to provide for their families and contribute positively to their communities. In doing so, it seeks to urge Washington to focus on the matters that truly affect everyday lives.
It is imperative to prioritize lower costs and combat the detrimental impacts of MAGA policies on Main Street. The time for change is now if the ambitions of working Americans are to be fulfilled.
