Ian Somerhalder Embraces Farm Life for Balance Amidst Hollywood Chaos

Ian Somerhalder, known for his role in the hit series ‘Vampire Diaries,’ has opened up about the fulfilling lifestyle he enjoys on his farm. In a recent interview, the actor highlighted the tough yet rewarding nature of rural living, asserting that it provides a serenity unmatched by the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.

Somerhalder explained that living on a farm instills a level of respect and appreciation for nature that urban environments often overlook. He stated, “It’s a lot of work. But the reality of it is, especially with recent wildfires in California, I feel connected to my roots in Louisiana. This lifestyle helps me achieve a sense of balance.”

He emphasized that while many city dwellers may not comprehend the joys of farming, they ultimately benefit from the fresh produce and quality products that rural communities supply. Somerhalder remarked, “There’s this incredible flow of commerce and mutual respect between urban and rural areas that I truly cherish.”

Life on the Farm with Family

Living on a farm is more than just a business for Somerhalder; it is a family affair. The actor, alongside his wife, Nikki Reed, who is also a former star of the ‘Twilight’ series, along with their two children and nearly 20 animals, has embraced this lifestyle. In 2019, the couple made a significant life decision to leave Los Angeles in search of a more grounded existence.

In 2023, Somerhalder shared with E! News his preference for farm life over the entertainment industry. “Walking through the farm with kids and dogs and family, every stop presents opportunities to pull fruits or vegetables from bushes and feed everyone as we move along the land,” he elaborated.

While navigating the demands of parenthood, the couple has also taken the time to cultivate a variety of herbs such as rosemary and lavender. Their farm houses multiple animals ranging from cows to mini-donkeys and goats. When asked about the challenges of farm life, Somerhalder responded, “It requires a lot of labor. The actor proudly stated, “We are farm people. We grow most of our own food, and I find great joy in living in my cowboy boots.”

After leaving Hollywood a little over five years ago, he has co-founded a bourbon company, Brother’s Bond, with his ‘Vampire Diaries’ co-star, Paul Wesley. Somerhalder shared, “Paul and I worked together on ‘Vampire Diaries’ for eight years. It was during that time that we realized our shared passion for bourbon. My character had a deep interest in bourbon, often seen drinking it at unorthodox hours. Real-life bonds were formed over our shared appreciation for it as well.”
