ICE Addresses Family Separation Misconceptions and Denounces Church Riot

A senior official from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently refuted claims surrounding a family separation incident involving a 5-year-old boy in Minnesota. The official also condemned the actions of a crowd that unlawfully entered a church, asserting that their behavior was far from peaceful.

This week, a photo depicting a young child standing beside a black vehicle gained significant attention online, following an enforcement operation carried out in the Minneapolis area. Both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security clarified that the child was not targeted in the operation but was instead left behind by his father.

Marcos Charles, the Executive Assistant Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations at ICE, emphasized the importance of accurate information during a press briefing. He criticized politicians and activists who, according to him, are spreading fear in communities by promoting a misleading narrative regarding the agency’s operations.

Charles expressed, “It is disheartening to witness how misinformation is being used to instill fear about our actions and those we apprehend.” He elaborated on the agency’s commitment to protecting families, even in the face of challenging situations.

According to Charles, an ICE officer remained with the child during the father’s apprehension. After the arrest, the officer took the child to a nearby fast-food restaurant for a meal and ensured that he was well cared for. This detail highlights the human aspect of ICE’s operations, as Charles pointed out that the officers themselves are family-oriented individuals.

Amid these developments, Charles shared a troubling account regarding the child’s family members. He stated, “When we approached the residence to reunite the child with his family, they consciously chose not to allow him back inside. Charles further emphasized that ICE strives to minimize family separations, saying, “We do everything possible to ensure families stay together. After the officers gathered the necessary information, they took the child back to the ICE facility where both father and son would receive proper care during their immigration proceedings.” He concluded by reaffirming the agency’s dedication to doing the right thing, regardless of the difficulty it may entail.

In addition to addressing the family separation incident, Charles condemned the recent actions of a group protesting against ICE. This group breached a church in St. Paul earlier this week, leading to heightened tensions in the community.

Attorney General Pam Bondi reported that several arrests had been made in connection with the church incident, including one of the alleged organizers, Nekima Levy Armstrong. Bondi characterized the event as a coordinated attack on Cities Church in St. Paul, which involved aggressive disruption of a worship service.

Charles firmly asserted that federal laws safeguard religious freedoms and the right to worship without disturbance. He emphasized that the actions of the protesters did not constitute a peaceful demonstration. In his remarks, he stated, “They rioted during church services. They yelled at and intimidated children, obstructing the rights of Minnesotans to worship freely.”

Having spent 33 years in law enforcement, Charles expressed concern regarding the unique nature of this protest. He remarked, “This marks the first occasion in my career where I’ve witnessed a disruption of worship in such a hostile manner. It is alarming that sacred spaces, which should be respected, are being targeted and misused for agitation against families.”
