EXCLUSIVE REPORT: The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, announced that federal agents successfully apprehended members of a South American theft ring accused of carrying out violent home invasions across Texas. This group is believed to have operated in the U.S. illegally, specifically targeting families and small business owners.
Authorities report that the theft ring employed ruthless tactics in their series of armed break-ins throughout the Lone Star State, with one incident captured on video that has since gone viral. The footage shows two masked men wielding handguns chasing a terrified resident inside his home, a scene that highlights the escalating danger posed by such criminal organizations.
In total, four suspects are now facing federal indictments related to these violent invasions, with two of them already convicted. This crackdown comes amid mounting concerns over public safety and the rise in violent crime in certain areas.
Shockingly, the suspects are linked to what is known as the South American Theft Group, commonly referred to as SATG. This organized network predominantly consists of foreign nationals primarily from South America who travel across the United States, targeting wealthy residences and businesses to commit theft and burglaries.
According to ICE, members of the group utilize sophisticated methods for planning their crimes. They often rely on encrypted messaging apps and burner phones, while conducting thorough pre-surveillance of neighborhoods to identify and track potential victims. During these home invasions, high-value items such as luxury watches, jewelry, and substantial amounts of cash are reported stolen.
Surprisingly, a significant number of individuals involved in this criminal activity have entered the U.S. illegally or are currently residing in the country on expired visas. Their illegal status further complicates efforts to ensure accountability and protection for affected communities.
The latest investigation highlighted one major felon, 38-year-old Joel Hallynson Espinal-Cantareo, an illegal immigrant from Honduras. Espinal-Cantareo was recently convicted and sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison for his role in a series of robberies that interfered with interstate commerce. His federal sentence will run consecutively with pending state cases.
Espinal-Cantareo’s crimes involved at least three separate home invasions in the cities of Irving, Cedar Hill, and Frisco. Victims reported being pistol-whipped, zip-tied, and coerced into handing over cash and other valuables, illustrating the violent methods employed by this group.
Travis Pickard, the Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations in Dallas, emphasized the seriousness of these crimes. He stated that the lengthy prison sentence serves as a strong warning against violent crime and threats to public safety, reinforcing the message that such behavior will not go unpunished. He added that Espinal-Cantareo’s criminal actions had a significant impact on small businesses and endangered lives, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to bring offenders to justice.
In addition to Espinal-Cantareo, three other suspects were indicted after Homeland Security Investigations presented the federal case to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sherman. A fourth individual, who faced separate prosecution by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, has already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
While some cases have progressed, ICE indicates that there are still two pending cases related to this theft ring. The agency has taken proactive steps by issuing an immigration detainer for Espinal-Cantareo, ensuring he will be transferred to federal immigration custody following the completion of his prison sentence. Following his release, ICE plans to pursue his deportation in an effort to secure community safety.
