Authorities in Idaho are contesting the accuracy of a recent television special focused on Bryan Kohberger’s high-profile murder case, asserting that it contains significant errors and outright fabrications. The claims come on the heels of Kohberger’s guilty plea earlier this year regarding the tragic deaths of four University of Idaho students.
Bryan Kohberger, who faces charges related to the November 13, 2022 murders of Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin, is currently serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. These sentences were handed down after his plea in July, which also included a felony burglary count. Following the sentencing, Judge Steven Hippler lifted a gag order, providing individuals involved in the case the ability to discuss matters related to it publicly.
In May, NBC aired a special episode of “Dateline” that featured new insights pertaining to the Kohberger case, revealing information that had not previously been disclosed. The “Dateline” episode discussed FBI cellphone tower data that allegedly tracked Kohberger’s phone near the crime scene, with pings recorded nearly a dozen times within 100 feet of the King Road residence. These movements reportedly began in July 2022 and extended until mid-August. The special also claimed a white Hyundai Elantra, resembling Kohberger’s vehicle, was spotted turning onto King Road multiple times on the night of the murders.
Idaho State Police Lt. Darren Gilbertson, who led the investigation, criticized the special, pointing out several inaccuracies. He stated, “There were some gross inaccuracies and just complete falsehoods” regarding the portrayal of facts surrounding the case.
In the special, it was noted that wounds sustained by Ethan Chapin were described as “carved”. Gilbertson disputed this assertion, clarifying that the injuries were the result of a singular strike to Chapin’s leg, and not indicative of ritualistic behavior. He emphasized that the assumptions made in the program were unfounded and inaccurate.
Furthermore, the show reported that Kohberger had sat down in Kernodle’s bedroom, suggesting it was due to exhaustion. Gilbertson labeled this narrative as “completely false” and stated, “He did not sit down in a chair anywhere in the house.” These corrections underscore a growing concern about the representation of evidence in media portrayals.

Gilbertson affirmed, “All that is pretty accurate. There were searches related to pornography, but it wasn’t extensive.” However, he cautioned against drawing conclusions from these searches, given that Kohberger had deleted significant amounts of data from his devices, which leaves gaps in the narrative authorities can present.
Investigation into Leaks Underway
Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson confirmed that a special prosecutor is overseeing an investigation into the sources of leaked information regarding the Kohberger case. This development raises questions about the dissemination of sensitive details surrounding the case to the media.
Thompson noted, “There is a special prosecutor, and I can tell you that we are not included or privy to what the investigation is doing, nor is the defense, is my understanding, nor is Judge Hippler.
