The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the suspect in the shooting that took place near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The alleged shooter, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, is accused of fatally wounding DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose during a violent confrontation.
The tragic incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, as White reportedly opened fire in front of the CDC campus. Witness reports describe a chaotic scene, with bullets striking multiple windows of CDC buildings. In the aftermath, investigators discovered numerous shell casings scattered on the pavement.
Images released by the GBI depicted a significant number of shell cartridges littering the area, highlighting the severity of the altercation.
According to CDC Director Susan Monarez, at least four buildings on the campus suffered direct hits from gunfire. Photographs circulated by employees showed several agency structures marred by bullet holes, illustrating the danger posed to the thousands of scientists and staff engaged in critical health research.
As law enforcement officers responded to the unfolding situation, they discovered Officer David Rose critically injured. Officers could still hear gunfire in the vicinity, particularly near a nearby CVS pharmacy. Despite immediate medical attention, Rose was rushed to Emory University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Police subsequently entered the CVS pharmacy and located White on the second floor with at least one gunshot wound. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum indicated that it remains uncertain whether this injury was inflicted by police or was self-inflicted.
Currently, the motive behind the shooting is yet to be determined. While Mayor Andre Dickens refrained from naming White publicly on Friday night, he described him as a “known person that may have some interest in certain things.”
The tragic events transpired on Clifton Road, which is not far from the Emory University campus that includes a daycare facility caring for more than 90 children. Fortunately, none of the children were harmed in this incident.
The GBI is leading the investigation, with assistance from the FBI’s Atlanta office. The GBI has stated that they are in the process of gathering evidence and conducting interviews, noting that the investigation will take an extended period.
Officer David Rose joined the DeKalb County Police Department in September 2024 and graduated from the police academy in March. He quickly earned accolades for his dedication and professionalism. Prior to his service in law enforcement, Rose was a Marine who served in Afghanistan.
He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children, as shared by the police.
Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick praised Rose’s commitment to the community, stating that the department is asking for prayers for Rose’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy within the DeKalb County Police Department.
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, highlighting that the state mourns the devastating loss of Officer David Rose. He emphasized that both Rose’s service and memory would remain embedded in the hearts of the state and those who knew him as a dedicated officer.
As tributes flow in from the community, many are reflective of the profound impact Rose had during his service. Friends, colleagues, and citizens are coming together to honor his legacy amidst this painful period.
