Identities Revealed of National Guard Members Injured in Targeted DC Attack as Investigation Escalates

In a shocking incident just blocks away from the White House, two National Guard members were critically injured in a targeted attack the day before Thanksgiving. The individuals have since been identified as Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, and Andrew Wolfe, aged 24. Both had been on duty for less than 24 hours prior to the ambush, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, who provided updates during a press conference on Thursday morning.

During the press briefing, Pirro stated, “I want to emphasize that both Sarah and Andrew were sworn in less than 24 hours before falling victim to this heinous act in Washington.”

Deputy and Wolfe are both members of the West Virginia National Guard, deployed to the nation’s capital in response to a recent executive order from President Donald Trump aimed at addressing crime in the city.

Tragic Events Unfolding

Pirro praised the bravery of the two Guardsmen, noting, “They answered the call. They took the charge. They volunteered their service and put their lives on the line for individuals unknown to them.”

Alongside Pirro at the press conference were FBI Director Kash Patel, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Brigadier General Leland Blanchard of the National Guard. They shared critical information regarding the shooting, including details about the suspect’s weapon.

Shortly after 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Beckstrom and Wolfe, dressed in their military uniforms, were near the Farragut West Metro station when an assailant ambushed them in what officials characterized as a brazen and coordinated attack.

The Attack

Pirro described the assault, stating, “A lone gunman opened fire without any provocation, attacking ambush style. Armed with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver, he struck one Guardsman, who fell down, and then the shooter leaned over and assaulted the Guardsman again. The second Guardsman was also hit multiple times.”

In a swift response, other nearby Guardsmen rushed towards the threat. One of them managed to return fire, successfully subduing the suspect shortly thereafter.

Suspect’s Background Under Scrutiny

The shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains under heavy security.

Authorities are currently treating the incident as a potential act of international terrorism. The investigation has attracted attention at both local and national levels, with officials emphasizing the need for thorough scrutiny regarding Lakanwal’s background.

Patel shared insights from recent discussions with CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, confirming Lakanwal’s past connections with U.S. partner forces while in Afghanistan.

“We are fully exploring this aspect of his history, including any known associates based both overseas and within the United States,” Patel remarked.

Legal Entry and Asylum Status

Lakanwal arrived in the United States legally in 2021, granted entry under humanitarian parole as part of the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome, which followed the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan. Notably, his asylum application was approved during the Trump administration.

In light of the gravity of this situation, federal authorities have executed several search warrants across the nation, particularly focusing on Lakanwal’s last known residence in Bellingham, Washington.

Patel reported, “During these searches, we seized numerous electronic devices including cell phones, laptops, and iPads. These materials are currently under analysis.”

Investigative Leads and Collaboration

Evidence traced back to Washington has propelled investigators to San Diego, where multiple subjects are being interviewed. Patel remarked, “Our investigative methods and discussions there have led us to pursue leads extending to San Diego, and we will continue conducting interviews as needed.”

“Our commitment is to follow the evidence wherever it may lead,” he added, reassuring the public of the dedication to uncovering the motives behind this violent, premeditated attack.

Public Reaction and Community Impact

The violent nature of this attack has left the D.C. community shaken, stirring conversations about safety in the area, especially for service members on duty. Community leaders have called for enhanced measures to ensure the protection of those who serve and protect.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are likely to reinforce security protocols. Residents are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for swift justice for the injured Guardsmen and clarity surrounding the motivations of the attacker.

Vigil for the Victims

In light of the ongoing investigation, a vigil is being organized for Beckstrom and Wolfe, where community members will gather to honor their service and bravery. The event aims to foster solidarity and support, showcasing how the D.C. community stands by those who protect them, even in the face of such abhorrent violence.

The meticulous examination of evidence and witness interviews will continue in the coming days, as officials strive to piece together the circumstances that led to this tragic incident. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert while navigating the complexities of this high-profile case.
