The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) gathered for a solemn memorial ceremony at the Nahal Oz base on Thursday, reflecting on the second anniversary of the devastating Hamas attack that occurred on October 7, 2023. This event underscored the sacrifices made by soldiers in the combat that followed that tragic day.
High-ranking officials from the General Staff Forum attended the ceremony. Notable attendees included IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Yiska Steinberg, the widow of former Nahal Brigade commander Col. Yonatan Steinberg. At 6:29 a.m., exactly when the attacks began in 2023, the participants observed a moment of silence, honoring those who lost their lives during that fateful day and the subsequent conflict.
Col. Ido Kass, who led the inquiry into the events of October 7, recounted the harrowing timeline of the attack at the Nahal Oz base, shedding light on the challenges faced by the forces on that day.
In addition to the memorial, a panel discussion titled “Memory, Responsibility, Heroism, and Hope” featured members of the General Staff Forum, including Cpt. Bar Zonshine, who has extensive experience in regional battles, along with former hostages Chen and Agam Goldstein-Almog.
During the event, Zamir emphasized the importance of confronting the failures that occurred on October 7 while also expressing a commitment to the future. He stated, “On this day, we face head-on the failure of October 7 and look forward toward our future. We bow our heads before the civilians, commanders, and troops who bravely gave their lives. Our commitment is to continue supporting the bereaved families, our troops, the wounded, both physically and mentally, as well as the survivors of captivity. We will not rest until we bring back the last of the fallen hostages; this is our moral duty.”
Zamir reiterated the IDF’s determination to learn from past mistakes. He commented, “Out of our commitment, we have conducted inquiries into the battles and presented them to the communities. We continue to study, evaluate, and implement the lessons learned, ensuring that the IDF will not repeat past errors. It is our duty to emerge from the events of the last two years with growth, renewal, and hope.”
Honoring heroism during adversity, Zamir announced the formation of the Decorations Committee. This initiative aims to recognize those who acted bravely and selflessly in the face of terror, ensuring their stories are told and honored.
Matan Angrest, who was among the 20 hostages released and returned to Israel on Monday, was kidnapped on October 7 while defending Nahal Oz base. His testimony highlights the severe challenges faced by hostages during their captivity.
Reports reveal that Angrest endured particularly harsh conditions, suffering from starvation and torture. While in captivity, Angrest’s asthma condition worsened, exacerbated by the damp and humid environment of the tunnels.
In a related report, former hostage Ron Krivoi, released from captivity in November 2023, shared his insights regarding the harsh treatment Angrest faced. Krivoi stated, “The interrogations he went through happened while still in Israeli territory. They connected him to a car battery and attempted to revive him. They electrocuted him using the batteries, making it nearly impossible for him to respond during interrogation.”
As the situation evolves, the IDF continues to address the plight of those still unaccounted for. Until now, Hamas has only returned the remains of nine out of 28 deceased hostages, as per the terms of the ceasefire agreement. Among the deceased whose remains are still held in Gaza are U.S. citizens Omer Neutra and Itay Chen. Chen tragically lost his life while fighting alongside Angrest against the Hamas forces.
This memorial ceremony serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing conflict and the sacrifices made by both soldiers and civilians. As Israel navigates the challenges that lie ahead, the IDF remains committed to honoring those who serve and ensuring that lessons from the past guide future actions.
The IDF’s ceremony underscores the deep impact of the October 7 attacks, highlighting not only the losses but also the dedication of military personnel and their families. The ongoing commitment to supporting those affected reflects a profound sense of responsibility.
Amid this grief, there is also a call to resilience. The IDF aims to emerge stronger from these experiences, emphasizing growth and renewal as essential components of military and national recovery. As discussions continue around the events of that day, the focus on memory and honor will play a crucial role in shaping Israel’s defense strategy moving forward.
