Illinois Teenager Arrested After Stabbing Pregnant Woman to Death and Setting Fire to Her Home

Tragic Incident in Downers Grove

A teenager from Illinois has been arrested for an alleged brutal attack on a pregnant woman, which included over 70 stab wounds and the abandonment of her pet dog. This shocking incident unfolded during what was supposed to be a simple Facebook Marketplace exchange in Downers Grove.

The Arrest and Charges

Nedas Revuckas, aged 19, faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder, intentional homicide of an unborn child, animal cruelty, armed robbery, and arson. Authorities state that he allegedly attacked Eliza Morales, who was 30 years old and five months pregnant, in her apartment on Monday afternoon. Details from the Downers Grove police paint a harrowing picture of the events leading to the tragedy.

Initial Meeting Through Facebook Marketplace

The disturbing series of events began when Revuckas responded to a Facebook Marketplace listing for a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck. This listing had been posted by Morales’s husband just days earlier. According to police investigations, Revuckas visited the Morales home to check out the pickup. He left possessing the truck but still carrying Morales’ license plates.

On Monday, he arranged to return the license plates and obtain a bill of sale, leading him back to the couple’s apartment building. Surveillance footage captured Revuckas meeting Morales at around 5:30 p.m. Shortly before the alleged attack, he was seen receiving a screwdriver from her.

Inside the Apartment

Five minutes later, Revuckas entered Morales’s apartment with the screwdriver concealed behind his back. Video evidence shows the door to their apartment opening and closing, implying a struggle was taking place inside. According to police, the door handle turning from the inside indicated that someone attempted to escape.

Tragically, moments later, smoke was reported emerging from beneath the apartment door. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find Morales near the door, but she was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital.

The Aftermath and Investigations

During the ordeal, Morales’s husband was at work, unaware of the nightmare unfolding in their home. The couple’s two-year-old child was not present, but their elderly dog was inside. Authorities later found that Revuckas had also attacked this dog, inflicting injuries including a stab wound between its eyes. Fortunately, the dog managed to escape through a sliding door and later received veterinary treatment.

After the horrific incident, investigators located Revuckas at his home in Westmont, where they spotted the stolen pickup truck in the driveway. He was taken into custody late Monday night. During initial questioning, Revuckas claimed he left the Morales apartment through the main entrance, but surveillance footage did not corroborate this statement.

Confession and Evidence

When detectives executed a search warrant at his home, they uncovered clothing and boots that appeared to be stained with blood. In a subsequent confession, Revuckas admitted to killing Morales, stating that he stabbed her multiple times, claiming to have been upset about the truck’s condition. He also mentioned Morales revealing her pregnancy during the struggle.

An autopsy conducted by the DuPage County Coroner’s office revealed approximately 70 stab wounds on Morales, chiefly targeting her head and neck. The examination concluded that her cause of death was due to multiple sharp-force injuries, with soot found in her airway, indicating she was alive during the fire.

Further Investigation

Additional findings included vaginal bruising, leading to the administration of a sexual assault kit, yet Revuckas denied any allegations of sexual assault. Furthermore, he confessed to igniting the fire using items located within the apartment and chemicals from the kitchen. Revuckas admitted to arranging household items on the stove to create a dangerous fire hazard.

The Community’s Reaction

The Morales family is now grappling with the pain of losing a beloved wife, mother, and daughter, along with her unborn child. Gabriel, Morales’s husband, expressed his grief in an interview, stating that he would spend his life missing her and would strive to keep her memory alive for their daughter. He emphasized the importance of remaining strong for his family during this unfathomable hardship.

In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $30,000 as of Thursday morning. A family member who organized the fundraiser highlighted the immense sorrow caused by the loss and noted that words are insufficient to express this profound pain.

Final Thoughts

This heartbreaking case has shocked the local community, raising questions about safety during online transactions. As law enforcement continues their investigation, the Morales family will forever bear the weight of this tragic event, serving as a solemn reminder of the potential dangers present in seemingly innocuous situations.
