The shocking news of Charlie Kirk’s tragic death at Utah Valley University has left many in a state of disbelief. For me, this loss runs deep, evoking profound sorrow as I reflect on our shared journey in advocating for a brighter America.
As the founder of Project H.O.O.D., I grieve not only for a significant conservative figure but for a genuine friend, a staunch supporter, and a brother in the quest for social betterment. To me, Charlie represented much more than a political figure; he embodied a man of action, strong convictions, and an unyielding faith as a devoted Christian whose generosity extended far beyond the public eye.
In our time together, I experienced the depth of his kindness. He never relished attention for his benevolent acts, and I kept many of our shared experiences private. However, with his passing, it feels imperative to share the goodness he spread.
I first encountered Charlie during the formative years of Project H.O.O.D., when our visions—his Turning Point USA and my mission to revitalize the South Side of Chicago—were just blooming. Although he was only 18 at the time, his passion and determination left a lasting impression on me, a man with two decades more experience. Charlie possessed an extraordinary clarity of purpose.
Charlie was not simply a voice encouraging change; he actively shaped it. He recognized the commitment Project H.O.O.D. held toward creating a better America and offered invaluable mentorship, connecting us with supporters who shared our mission of providing hope and opportunity to those often overlooked by society.
His generosity at our fundraising events was remarkable, but it was the simple words of encouragement—a text message saying, “Keep going, Pastor, we’re with you”—that truly mattered. Charlie had an exceptional ability to make everyone feel important and appreciated in their roles within this movement.
Charlie was set to join us in Washington, D.C., for a significant fundraiser—a moment I had eagerly awaited, having not seen him lately. He was ready to participate in our Walk Across America, using his voice and platform to uplift those who most needed support. Losing him before that pivotal day strikes a deep chord within us all. His death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers we face when we dare to challenge societal norms and voice our beliefs.
As someone actively fighting for change in a often hostile world, I feel Charlie’s absence on a personal level. His killing forces us to acknowledge the escalating risks individuals face when advocating for truth. Nevertheless, Charlie’s life offers an essential lesson—that we must not allow fear to dictate our actions.
He courageously confronted challenges without flinching, engaging in difficult conversations and cultural battles that defined his mission. Charlie transformed Turning Point USA into a movement that inspired millions of young individuals to embrace conservative values, driven not by fear but by passion, hope, and reason.
The Bible reminds us in John 15:13 that the highest form of love involves laying down one’s life for friends. While Charlie may not have consciously chosen this fate, he lived every day devoted to serving others—his family, his country, and the countless young individuals he influenced.
His untimely death represents a clarion call for action. We must refuse to allow fear to silence us and violence to overshadow the light of truth. Charlie’s legacy demands that we forge ahead, honoring his memory by continuing the work he cherished. This entails nurturing communities, instilling hope, and unwaveringly supporting our beliefs.
Upon hearing the heartbreaking news, I went to social media, where I quickly found a post from his wife, Erika. It stated, “Psalm 46:1 — God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” In this moment of unbearable sorrow, her choice of scripture reminds us that amidst devastation, God remains a source of comfort and strength. This serves to highlight that while grief does not eliminate pain, faith can anchor us during tumultuous times.
To Erika and their two children, I extend my deepest sympathies. Charlie was a dedicated husband and father. His family, friends, and the Turning Point USA community will forever cherish the impact he made through the lives he touched and the movements he propelled forward.
As I reflect on Charlie Kirk’s life, I remember his unwavering faith in the American Dream—a vision he championed not just for himself but for everyone. We must honor him by steadfastly carrying that dream forward, unyielding in the face of darkness.
Charlie, your legacy will stay alive in our hearts. We love you, and we pledge to keep fighting for the ideals you embodied.
