At Alpha School, students engage in just two hours of classroom instruction each day, guided by an advanced Artificial Intelligence tutor. Remarkably, these students consistently perform in the top 1 to 2 percent nationally on standardized tests.

MacKenzie Price, the co-founder of Alpha School, highlighted the institution’s cutting-edge methods during a recent interview. She mentioned, “We use an AI tutor and adaptive apps to provide a completely personalized learning experience. Our students are learning faster and achieving remarkable results, placing us in the top 2 percent of schools across the country.”

Revolutionizing the Academic Routine

After the condensed morning academic block, students at Alpha School focus on cultivating real-world skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and financial literacy. This innovative model encourages holistic development, allowing students to pursue their passions.

Price, a Stanford-educated psychologist, established Alpha School after observing her daughters come home from traditional school feeling unchallenged and bored. The first campus opened its doors in Austin in 2016, following two years of careful development.

The premise behind this approach is straightforward yet bold. By condensing core academic subjects into just two hours each day, Alpha School frees up additional time for personal growth and exploration.

Student Perspectives on the New Learning Model

Elle Kristine, a junior who has attended Alpha since second grade, articulated her experience during an appearance on television. She commented, “I have a lot of friends in traditional schools. They’re overwhelmed with schoolwork, stressed out, and frankly miserable.”

In contrast to her peers, Kristine stated, “We manage to complete all our academics in just three hours a day. The remainder of our time is dedicated to exploring our interests and working on passion projects.”

One of Kristine’s impressive endeavors includes developing a safe AI dating coach for teenagers. This project was recently featured in a prominent publication, showcasing the incredible opportunities available at Alpha School. She enthused, “What 16-year-old has time for that? It’s awesome!”

Expansion Plans and Personalized Learning

Currently, Alpha School operates multiple campuses in Austin, Brownsville, and Miami, providing education from Pre-K through high school levels. The Austin location features both a K–8 academy and a dedicated high school campus, while the Brownsville site experiences rapid growth and the Miami campus serves students up to the 10th grade.

Enrollment at Alpha School remains intentionally limited, with around 150 students at the original Austin campus. This small size fosters a more personalized educational experience, enabling individualized attention for each student.

Instead of conventional classroom teachers, Alpha employs educational guides who prioritize coaching and emotional support, while the AI system handles academic instruction. Price noted, “Our guides spend all their time working closely with students. That essential human connection cannot be replaced by AI. However, the AI systems facilitate a truly personalized learning environment for everyone involved.”

Pursuing a Nationwide Model

With impressive results and growing interest from parents, Alpha School aims to expand its unique educational model beyond Texas. The school has announced plans to establish seven new campuses across the country by Fall 2025.

Planned locations for the new campuses include:

Texas: Houston and Fort Worth (K–8)
Florida: Orlando, Tampa, and Palm Beach (K–8)
Arizona: Phoenix (K–8)
California: Santa Barbara (K–12)
New York: New York City (K–8)

Applications for these new campuses are presently open. Tuition varies by location and averages between $40,000 to $50,000 annually, although the Brownsville campus benefits from subsidies to increase accessibility for families.

Price expressed optimism about the scalability of this learning model, stating, “This approach is infinitely scalable and accessible. It is designed to support students who are struggling and also those who find traditional classrooms boring.”

Political Support for School Choice

Alpha School’s rise coincides with a favorable political climate for school choice initiatives. In January, former President Trump signed an executive order compelling the Department of Education to assist states in redirecting federal education funds to support school-choice programs, including charter schools and education savings accounts.

Trump stated, “Parents want and deserve the best education for their children. Sadly, many children do not thrive in their assigned, government-run K–12 schools.” Education Secretary Linda McMahon praised this policy shift, referencing it as a landmark opportunity for families and local communities.

McMahon further emphasized, “We are returning education decision-making back to the states. Families deserve control over how their children learn—whether through AI-powered schools, faith-based options, or traditional public classrooms.”

The changes also allow parents to utilize 529 savings accounts to cover private K–12 tuition costs and advocate for state-level applications for federal grants that encourage innovative educational practices.

As Alpha School continues to innovate and redefine the learning landscape, it promises to challenge the traditional notions of education. The effectiveness of its AI-supported model could inspire other institutions to rethink their approaches, ultimately benefiting students across the nation.
