On a recent Thursday, FOX News Media CEO Suzanne Scott engaged in an inspiring fireside chat with students from the University of South Carolina. This event, part of the Baldwin Lecture series at the College of Information and Communications, delved into the evolving landscape of media operations and the dynamic nature of journalism.
During the discussion, Scott was accompanied by Lawrence Jones, co-host of “FOX & Friends,” who expertly moderated the session. Scott recounted the early days when Rupert Murdoch, Chairman Emeritus of Fox Corporation, announced the launch of the network just five months after she was hired. Many might have perceived this timeline as daunting; however, Scott embraced it as an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
“I started entry-level as a programming assistant with a great boss who mentored me,” Scott shared. “Due to our short staffing, I frequently volunteered for various responsibilities.” Reflecting on those initial months, Scott noted, “It involved long days, seven days a week, but we successfully launched the network, which propelled my career forward.” Her results-driven attitude laid the groundwork for numerous opportunities and promotions.
Jones prompted Scott to reflect on the vital lessons she learned on her path from entry-level employee to chief executive. “I always operate as a startup; I never take my position for granted,” she emphasized. Scott highlighted four key principles that guide her leadership: culture, creativity, collaboration, and adaptability to change.
Scott underscored how these components collectively empower FOX News Media to thrive. “Over the past 30 years, I’ve learned that the most crucial aspect is the culture within the organization. Despite what is often said about Fox News, it is indeed the happiest workplace, and we have an incredible team.” She further stated, “I am a people-first leader, viewing our organization as a vast family.”
According to Scott, surrounding oneself with the right people is essential for success. “Having the best individuals in every position is critical to our mission,” she asserted. Throughout her career, she has enjoyed working with diverse colleagues, including the influential TV pioneer Chet Collier, who played a crucial role in shaping Fox News Channel during its inception.
Scott fondly recalled her time working with Collier, describing it as a master class in talent development. “He taught me the nuances of producing engaging shows and building connections with audiences,” she explained. This early mentorship significantly influenced her approach to leadership.
Scott emphasized the importance of empathy in leadership, acknowledging that personal challenges can impact employees’ performance. “Caring for our people and fostering a supportive environment is vital to our collective success,” she said. It’s crucial for young professionals to familiarize themselves with various AI applications across industries,” she asserted.

Scott highlighted the introduction of the drone program at FOX News, which began in 2012 and has since flourished under her leadership. “We now employ 200 drone pilots, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and adapting to new technologies,” she stated.
As the conversation wrapped, Scott reinforced that the industry will continue to evolve. “There are change agents in every newsroom, and as producers and camera operators, adaptability is key to staying ahead in this business,” she asserted.
