FIRST ON FOX: Consumers’ Research, a prominent nonprofit organization focused on consumer education, has initiated a robust campaign targeting Chubb Limited, a leading insurance company, and its CEO, Evan Greenberg. The campaign, which launched recently, aims to expose what they describe as Greenberg’s ‘deep ties to the Chinese Communist Party’.
The initiative, branded as ‘China Chubb’, forms part of a larger seven-figure project that accuses the insurance giant and its CEO of ‘cozying up to the CCP’. Furthermore, it claims Chubb is leveraging its market influence to promote a progressive, political agenda that contradicts the interests of American consumers.
This endeavor is a component of Consumers’ Research’s broader Consumers First Initiative, designed to unveil companies that allegedly prioritize political interests over consumer welfare. Chubb, which operates in 54 countries and employs more than 40,000 individuals, is a significant player in the insurance market.
The campaign encompasses a national television advertisement, lasting 30 seconds, titled ‘China Chubb’, which is set to air across various platforms shortly. This advertisement serves as a centerpiece of the campaign and aims to galvanize public awareness regarding perceived connections between Chubb and the Chinese government.
In addition to the advertisement, the campaign features a dedicated website and a mobile billboard that will circulate through key locations in Washington, D.C., including Capitol Hill and Chubb’s Washington office. Additionally, a digital push through various social media outlets and online news platforms will further amplify the message.
Consumers’ Research states that the main objective of the campaign is to elucidate to American consumers the true nature of Chubb’s partnerships, especially those with the Chinese government and its representatives. The organization aims to publicize how closely Greenberg engages with the CCP.
The ad campaign has received a vehement response from a Chubb spokesperson, who called it ‘completely dishonest’. They affirm that Greenberg has consistently criticized China’s authoritarian regime and advocated for American interests.
Robert O’Brien, a former National Security Adviser to President Trump, has also come to Greenberg’s defense, stating, ‘In my interactions with Evan, he has been a staunch proponent of U.S. interests in the region.’ O’Brien emphasized that Chubb’s operations in China have played a role in reducing the U.S. trade deficit, thus positioning Greenberg as an advocate rather than as a collaborator with the CCP.
However, an investigation by Fox News Digital revealed that Greenberg has established both personal and professional connections with CCP officials. This includes meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and public endorsements of the CCP’s global strategies.
In a notable event earlier this year, Greenberg was seen at the China Development Forum alongside other prominent business leaders, gaining direct access to top CCP officials. Such interactions have raised concern among critics about his close ties with the regime.
Additionally, Greenberg was photographed in a government press release shaking hands with Wang Yi, an influential member of the CCP. The press release highlighted Greenberg’s assertion that the U.S.-China relationship is paramount on the global stage.
In past engagements, Greenberg has delivered complimentary remarks about China’s ‘resilience and vitality’, suggesting a complicated relationship with the nation that some view as increasingly contentious.
Despite the described criticisms, Greenberg has not shied away from his connections with the Chinese government. In November 2023, he introduced President Xi at a San Francisco event, reinforcing a narrative that suggests he endorses engagement with Chinese leadership.
His election as Board Chair of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations further exemplifies his influence within circles that advocate for cooperation with China, even amid rising tensions.
In 2022, Chubb was granted approval to increase its majority stake in Huatai Insurance Group, a significant Chinese insurance provider. This strategic move underscores the intricacies at play in the evolving landscape of U.S.-China relations, especially in light of growing skepticism regarding China’s actions on the world stage.
Greenberg has articulated concerns regarding the Taiwan situation and the potential risks it poses to U.S.-China relations. In his view, the U.S. should approach the matter with caution, emphasizing diplomatic communication over military posturing.
