Montana authorities are escalating a multi-agency manhunt for a former soldier suspected of shooting four individuals at a local bar. The suspect, Michael Paul Brown, is believed to be armed and has supposedly acquired survival gear and camping equipment from a stolen vehicle.
According to the Montana Department of Justice, Brown, 45, was last spotted fleeing the Owl Bar shooting on Friday night. Eyewitness accounts indicate he was shirtless and barefoot during his escape. Subsequent reports suggest he was later seen near a stolen white Ford F-150, which contained clothing, food, and outdoor gear.
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen provided an update on the situation, stating, “We know Michael Paul Brown was shirtless and barefoot when he fled. We have strong reasons to believe that he is now clothed and possibly carrying camping gear, enabling him to navigate undetected in this rugged area.”
As of Monday, Brown remains on the run, despite extensive search efforts over the weekend.
The manhunt for Brown has significantly broadened, engaging hundreds of local, state, and federal officers. This includes the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the FBI, and U.S. Marshals. The lead agency, the Montana Department of Justice, has been in continuous communication with the public for updates.
Brown was last identified in Stump Town, located just west of Anaconda, Montana, a small town known for its steep, remote, and heavily wooded terrain. Authorities emphasize that the challenging landscape complicates search efforts.
Knudsen commented on the difficulties faced by local law enforcement, stating, “They are navigating incredibly rugged terrain, which stretches our resources thin at this time.”
In the aftermath of the Owl Bar shooting, the four victims have been identified as Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 64, Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59, David Allen Leach, 70, and Tony Wayne Palm, 74. All were well-known community members within Anaconda, which has a population of approximately 9,000. Kelley worked as a bartender in the establishment where the tragedy occurred, while the others were patrons.
According to reports, Brown lived adjacent to the bar, raising questions about his motives and actions leading up to the shooting.
Residents expressed shock and sorrow, with one local stating, “In a town like this, everybody knows everybody.”
Clare Boyle, Brown’s niece, disclosed that her uncle has faced mental health challenges for many years. She emphasized that family members had sought support for him repeatedly.
In a heartfelt Facebook message to the Associated Press, Boyle reflected, “This isn’t just a drunk/high man going wild. It’s a sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either.”
The U.S. Marshals Service is currently offering a reward of $7,500 for any information that leads to Brown’s capture. Citizens are urged to call 1-877-926-8332 to report any tips regarding his whereabouts. Community members are advised to remain indoors and stay vigilant, as the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
Brown is described as standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. State officials have cautioned residents against approaching him, emphasizing the immediate danger he poses.
Brown’s military history adds another layer of complexity to this tragic situation. He served as an armor crewman in the Army from January 2001 until May 2005. He was later part of the National Guard from April 2006 to March 2008, having deployed to Iraq during that period. Brown left the Army with the rank of sergeant.
Additionally, he served in the Montana National Guard until March 2009, which raises concerns about his training and possible access to firearms.
The Anaconda community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event. As the search for Brown continues, residents seek both safety and answers. Authorities remain engaged in the pursuit, employing every resource available in hopes of bringing closure to the families affected.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided to ensure that the public remains informed and vigilant. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health and the impacts of violence in communities.
