Intense Military Operations Surround Gaza Hospitals Amid Health System Crises

Israel has encircled two of the last functioning hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip, as reported by medical staff and humanitarian organizations. The World Health Organization warns this military activity is critically exhausting the health system.

In a recent statement, an Israeli military spokesperson announced that the military is entering a new operational phase, designed to achieve war objectives including the return of kidnapped soldiers and the defeat of the militant group Hamas.

IDF Col. Avichay Adraee shared on social media that deployments from the 401st Brigade and Givati Brigade, operating under the command of the 162nd Division, have moved into northern Gaza. These forces are reportedly targeting buildings deemed suspicious and have eliminated numerous Hamas fighters.

The fate of the Indonesian hospital and al-Awda hospital is dire, as they represent two of northern Gaza’s only remaining medical facilities, according to the Associated Press.

Evacuation Orders and Health Facility Struggles

Authorities in Israel issued evacuation orders for large segments of northern Gaza in anticipation of upcoming military operations. These efforts aim to pressure Hamas into releasing more hostages, according to local officials.

Both hospitals, in addition to three primary healthcare centers, lie within the evacuation zones. Although evacuation orders were issued for the surrounding neighborhoods, the facilities themselves were not subject to mandatory evacuation directives.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, stated that additional hospitals and healthcare centers exist perilously close to the evacuation zone, raising significant safety concerns.

The Israeli military’s operations, alongside the evacuation orders, have driven the health system in Gaza to the brink. Ghebreyesus emphasized that the current situation is unsustainable.

Challenges Faced by Gaza Hospitals

Reports indicate Israeli drones have been monitoring the Indonesian hospital closely since Sunday. An aid organization supporting the hospital confirmed that their operations are severely restricted.

While the Israeli military claimed no entrance into the hospital itself occurred and that ambulances were permitted to resume operations, troubling reports emerged. For instance, Israeli bulldozers reportedly demolished a perimeter wall, according to MERC-Indonesia, an aid group that supports the hospital.

On Tuesday, airstrikes targeted the hospital’s generators, resulting in a fire that significantly damaged its primary power supply. Such attacks raise significant alarm for remaining hospital staff and patients.

Urgent Humanitarian Needs

At least one staff member perished during the ongoing conflict, and the remaining personnel at the hospital are in desperate need of basic essentials, including water and food. The United Nations is currently engaged in efforts to transfer patients to alternative medical facilities.

In a related incident, Israeli drones targeted the al-Awda hospital courtyard, preventing any movement in and out of the facility. Board member Rami Shurafi noted that the hospital remains at risk amidst ongoing strikes.

Reports of Israeli drones firing upon ambulances attempting to transport patients added to the mounting concerns about the safety of medical personnel and patients on the ground. As spokesperson Khaled Alhelo described, anyone seen moving in or around the hospital faces gunfire.

The dire circumstances have trapped approximately 47 patients, including nearly 20 children and several pregnant women, within the hospital walls. This situation is compounded by the presence of around 140 doctors and medical staff members, all facing imminent threat while trying to provide care.

Slow Progress on Humanitarian Aid

In the midst of these escalating tensions, Israel has recently allowed a small influx of food and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip. This change comes after more than two and a half months of strict blockades that prohibited imports for the region’s 2 million Palestinian residents.

However, despite the arrival of a few dozen aid trucks earlier this week, the United Nations has reported significant delays in distribution caused by Israeli military protocols. This sluggish pace underscores the continued humanitarian crisis in the region.
