A comprehensive law enforcement operation named “Fool Around and Find Out” has led to the arrests of 255 individuals linked to human trafficking and child sexual exploitation in Central Florida. This operation marks a historic moment for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, generating the highest number of arrests ever recorded in a single sting.
Spanning over nine days in May, the endeavor entailed a collaboration between various law enforcement agencies, prominently featuring the involvement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). For the first time, ICE was embedded within the Polk County department, according to Sheriff Grady Judd.
“We executed a series of well-planned strategies, focusing on online platforms where these offenders were known to operate,” Judd reflected. “Our team did an exceptional job leading up to this operation.”
The sting not only targeted human traffickers and sexual predators but also exposed a significant facet of undocumented migration in the region. Among those arrested, 36 individuals were identified as illegal migrants, with Sheriff Judd revealing that 26 of these had not registered with federal authorities prior to this operation.
“These individuals slipped into the country and failed to check in with federal authorities,” he stated. “As a result, they were not even on the government’s radar.” Judd emphasized the potential link between the presence of these undocumented migrants and crime rates in Florida, suggesting that their absence might have resulted in a notable decrease in criminal activities.
“Had those illegal immigrants not been present, we could have experienced a 15% reduction in crime,” he asserted.
In this extensive operation, a diverse array of suspects emerged, highlighting a cross-section of society. Individuals arrested included a medical doctor, an executive from the American Red Cross, active and retired military personnel, and notably, a former NFL player, Adarius Taylor. Before his retirement in 2020, Taylor played for teams such as the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Sheriff Judd detailed an alarming incident involving Taylor, who allegedly left his medically vulnerable child alone in a vehicle while he sought sexual favors from an undercover officer posing as a prostitute. Another suspect reportedly engaged with the operation even while his wife was undergoing cancer treatment at home.
“Can you believe this?” Judd exclaimed. “Your wife needs you the most during her illness, and you’re out soliciting sex. It’s astonishing how many similar stories we uncovered.”
Throughout the investigation, law enforcement charged 102 felonies and 284 misdemeanors. The suspects collectively boasted a staggering 400 felonies and 519 misdemeanors on their records. Serious charges ranged from premeditated murder, attempted murder, and robbery to aggravated battery and sexual assault.
Judd opined that the online prostitution industry serves as a platform for traffickers and perpetuates the cycle of victimization. “Our goal is to identify victims, provide necessary assistance, and hold accountable those who exploit others, including those who solicit prostitution and those profiting from this abuse,” he stated. “Prostitution is anything but a victimless crime—it leads to exploitation, addiction, violence, and family disintegration.”
Polk County maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards criminal behavior. Sheriff Judd vowed that this operation would not be the last. “We will continue to pursue future operations like this, relentlessly,” he declared.
His message is decisive: individuals coming to Florida with malicious intentions will be brought to light and face the repercussions of their actions. “Florida is a sought-after destination for families. People travel here from all over the globe, often with children. We must ensure that our environment is safe. That is our priority,” he noted.
“If you think you can hide in the shadows and that your actions will be overlooked, you are mistaken,” he warned. “We will expose you nationally, and that promise is unwavering.”
As the Polk County Sheriff’s Office prepares for future endeavors, their commitment to combating human trafficking and safeguarding the community remains strong. Judd reinforced the importance of community collaboration and vigilance in addressing these critical issues.
Citizens are encouraged to stay informed and engaged in reporting suspicious activities as law enforcement agencies continue to emphasize the necessity of collective efforts in uprooting criminal enterprises. The message is clear: Florida will not tolerate human trafficking or exploitation, and the fight against these crimes is far from over.
