An active investigation is currently underway in Southern California regarding the mysterious disappearance of a missing 74-year-old man, Naiping Hou. Police have labeled the situation a “suspicious disappearance” as concerns grow over his safety.
Authorities from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department have released new details aimed at locating Hou, a resident of Rancho Cucamonga. His family reported him missing on May 4, 2025, prompting officials to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Investigators uncovered what they described as “extensive fraudulent activity” linked to Hou’s bank accounts coinciding with the time of his disappearance. This alarming finding suggests that foul play could be involved.
In an unsettling twist, police revealed that unknown individuals used Hou’s cell phone to communicate with family members, impersonating him in digital conversations. This is raising concerns that he may have been abducted.
Family members, including his son Wen Hou, have voiced their belief that this incident may tie back to the family’s significant financial success in the cryptocurrency sector. To ensure their father’s safe return, they are offering a $250,000 reward.
“I miss him dearly,” said Wen Hou, reflecting on the deep bond with his father. “He has always been a guiding presence in my life.”
Wen Hou, who has seen substantial financial achievements through cryptocurrency investments, expressed concerns that someone might have stolen his father’s identity. The criminal activity allegedly resulted in over $1 million being drained from Hou’s accounts.
Wen suspects that the perpetrator has been using false text messages to communicate with the family while pretending to be his father. “It’s surreal to think someone may be impersonating my dad through text,” he stated.
This strange series of events appeared to ignite in January 2025 when Naiping Hou began overseeing home renovations after suffering from a severe water leak. Although he was engaged in arranging repairs, he did not exhibit any signs of distress, according to his family.
“He didn’t raise any red flags at the time. We knew he was getting quotes from various contractors,” Wen Hou recounted. “He was temporarily residing in an apartment covered by insurance, so he wasn’t hands-on with the daily construction work.”
Following the house repairs in March, Naiping joined his son and friends for a fishing trip, during which everything seemed normal until an alarming change occurred.
Upon returning home, Wen Hou discovered that his father’s residence was completely cleared out. “The place was entirely empty. There were no people, no vehicles, not even any garbage left behind,” he said.
Later, the family learned more distressing news: several of Naiping Hou’s bank accounts had been drained, with unauthorized transactions exceeding $1 million. Reports indicated that funds were being siphoned off to purchase gold and cryptocurrency online.
“He’s not tech-savvy at all, so I don’t understand how he could have initiated any of that himself,” Wen continued. “We are genuinely worried, and we desperately want my dad back.”
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has requested the public’s assistance in locating Naiping Hou. He is described as an Asian male standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. A distinguishing mark is a birthmark on his left upper shoulder.
In addition, investigators are actively seeking information related to a silver Toyota Yaris linked to Hou’s disappearance. Mara Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s department, expressed the department’s concerns. “There has been significant unauthorized activity in his bank accounts. We are deeply worried about his well-being and are committed to bringing him home safely,” she said.
According to a dedicated website created for Naiping Hou’s search, he originally hails from China and serves as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, now semi-retired. He enjoys activities such as woodworking and playing ping pong at local recreation centers, keeping active within his community.
The Hou family is known for their commitment to hard work, family values, and philanthropy, contributing generously to education and public safety organizations as part of their larger mission of community support.
Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact Detective Vanayes Quezada from the Specialized Investigations Division at (909) 890-4848. The family and community remain hopeful for a positive resolution to this distressing situation, as they continue their search for Naiping Hou.
