Iowa State Coaches Face Disciplinary Actions for $100K Betting Scandal

Five current or former Iowa State football coaching staff members have received sanctions from the NCAA for their involvement in illegal sports gambling, which included placing bets on the university’s men’s and women’s basketball programs. Notably, these individuals will not face any criminal charges in connection with their actions.

The five coaches accounted for over 6,200 online bets, amassing a staggering total of more than $100,000. These wagers spanned across various events, including both professional games and college sports.

The NCAA designated the violations as Level II, indicating that they have the potential to undermine the integrity of the collegiate sports model.

The individuals implicated include Jace Heacock, Chase Clark, Michael Dryer, Kyle Highland, and Mason Williams.

As a result of their transgressions, any of these coaches who seek employment in another school’s athletic department must now attend the annual NCAA Regional Rules Seminar at their own cost. Additionally, they will serve a two-week suspension during the show-cause period. Currently, they are all subject to a one-year show-cause order extending through April 24, 2026.

Details of the Coaches’ Involvement

Jace Heacock, who is the son of defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, served as a football graduate assistant in the years 2021 and 2022. He returned to Iowa State as the director of football analytics on April 24. However, his biography on the Iowa State athletic website fails to clarify any roles he may have held in 2023 and 2024. Notably, investigators found that he placed 787 bets summing up to approximately $55,359.

Chase Clark, the former assistant director of football equipment operations, placed a total of 2,305 bets, amounting to about $18,676. This included a concerning 46 bets on Iowa State’s men’s and women’s basketball programs. Currently, he works as an assistant equipment manager for the Detroit Lions.

Michael Dryer previously served as an assistant in equipment operations and placed 1,182 bets, totaling around $11,536. His betting activities included 25 bets on Iowa State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. Dryer has transitioned to a sales position at a sporting goods company.

Kyle Highland, formerly a football recruiting operations assistant, engaged in 509 bets, which totaled about $6,365. Similar to his peers, he included eight bets on Iowa State’s basketball programs in his betting history. Highland now occupies the role of assistant director of football operations for the Army.

Mason Williams has a background as an associate in athletics equipment operations and placed 1,455 bets, which amounted to approximately $11,679. His betting history includes 12 bets on Iowa State’s basketball teams. Williams has also moved on and is now the head equipment manager at Valparaiso.

The five coaches were identified through a state investigation into sports wagering activities that took place within campus athletic facilities from 2021 to 2023. This investigation was initiated by the state Department of Criminal Investigation, which subsequently provided the names of these five individuals to Iowa State officials.

In the wake of the investigation, numerous athletes from both Iowa and Iowa State became entangled in legal issues, facing charges that included underage gambling and identity theft.

Over three dozen athletes have also initiated a civil lawsuit against the Department of Criminal Investigation, asserting that the agency violated their rights and damaged their reputations.
