JERUSALEM — Following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a renewed maximum economic sanctions campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a high-ranking Iranian general made alarming declarations on Thursday. The regime leader announced plans for an assault aimed at obliterating Israel, a key ally of the United States in the Middle East.
In a concerning escalation, Tehran executed two large-scale aerial attacks on Israel in 2024. These aggressive actions signal a troubling shift in Iran’s approach toward the Israeli state, raising alarms both in Washington and Jerusalem.
Media outlets in Iran reported statements from General Ebrahim Jabbari of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He stated, “Operation True Promise 3 will be carried out at the right time, with precision, and on a scale sufficient to destroy Israel and raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground.” Such incendiary rhetoric escalates tensions and highlights the Iranian regime’s intent.
In response to Jabbari’s remarks, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar took to social media platform X. He reminded the public that history teaches critical lessons. “If your enemy says his goal is to annihilate you – believe him. We are ready,” he asserted. This strong stance reflects Israel’s deep concern over Iran’s threats and its readiness to defend itself against potential aggression.
Middle East expert Tom Gross emphasized the seriousness of Iran’s genocidal threats, stating, “The Israeli foreign minister is right, of course. Genocidal threats from Iran need to be taken seriously. If previous threats by Iran and its Hamas terror allies had been taken more seriously, the Oct. 7 onslaught might have been prevented.” Gross’s insights underline the critical nature of assessing Iran’s intentions and capabilities.
Jabbari’s provocative comments may also be a calculated move to position Iran against Trump. He made the threat during military exercises named “The Great Exercise of Prophet Mohammad’s Power.” Jabbari attempted to convey that the United States’ influence in the region is waning by asserting, “The United States can do nothing against Yemen,” evidently aimed at framing U.S. actions in the Middle East as ineffective.
Since Trump ordered the military strike that killed IRGC General Qassem Soleimani in 2020, the Islamic Republic has harbored alarming intentions against him. The regime appears determined, with rumors circulating of assassination plans against Trump. Gross noted, “If they are trying to send a message to Trump, they should be careful. The U.S. president had no problem dispatching the previous head of the revolutionary guards in his first term, and since then, the regime has tried to assassinate Trump, who now has unfinished business with the regime in Tehran.”
Fox News Digital reported insights from the U.S. State Department, showing that Soleimani was responsible for the deaths of approximately 17% of U.S. troops during the Iraq War, totaling over 600 military personnel. This historical context casts a shadow over the current threats from Iran, as previous actions by the regime have led to substantial losses and escalating conflicts.
In response to Iran’s ongoing threats against his life, Trump remarked, “If they did that, it would be a terrible thing for them to do. If they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end. … There won’t be anything left.” This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of further escalation.
Gross suggests that Iran’s Islamic regime may be sensing vulnerability due to recent struggles, including losing support from allies like Hezbollah and Assad, and perhaps even Russia. The regime’s threats against Israel could be an attempt to divert attention from its own challenges and deter the U.S. from intervening in its nuclear ambitions.
Banafsheh Zand, an Iranian-American expert, expressed frustration over the lack of recognition of Iran’s hostile intentions. She stated, “The Khomeinist regime has never hidden its intentions, yet the West has continually chosen to ignore these threats. Even as the Shia regime destroyed Iran and its people while launching terrorist attacks worldwide, Western leaders ignored it. They could have supported the people of Iran and the region but willfully chose not to.”
Ali Khamenei leads the Islamic Republic of Iran, a regime the U.S. State Department has classified as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. Zand lamented that “Western leaders have proven to be short-sighted, entirely out of touch, greedy, and penny-wise and pound-foolish. Here we are, 46 years later, and the cycle of poor decisions continues, putting citizens in the West at risk.”
The current situation in Iran and its relationship with Israel presents an ever-growing threat in the international arena. As Iran continues to flex its military might and verbalize aggressive intentions, the global community must remain vigilant. Addressing the realities on the ground will require careful consideration and a unified approach to safeguard regional stability and prevent further hostilities.
