The governing body for soccer in Ireland, known as the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), has voted to request that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) suspend Israel from its competitions. This decision underscores a growing trend among European soccer governing bodies to address concerns related to Israel’s practices and policies.
This action marks the third time that a European soccer national governing body has sought Israel’s suspension from UEFA. Norway and Turkey have taken similar steps. Notably, even Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has added his voice to the chorus, advocating for Israel’s team to be excluded from international play.
The resolution passed by the FAI was proposed by the Irish club Bohemians and garnered support from over fifty percent of the delegates in attendance. The proposal cited two primary allegations against the Israel Football Association (IFA), focusing on significant violations of UEFA statutes. The first allegation involves the organization of soccer clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association. The second allegation centers on the IFA’s purported inability to implement a robust anti-racism policy.
The Irish federation also emphasized the need for UEFA to publish clear and transparent criteria governing the suspension or exclusion of member associations. This call aims to ensure that all member associations receive equitable treatment in similar cases.
Israel’s national team is scheduled to conclude its World Cup qualifying campaign with a match against Moldova on November 16. Currently, the team ranks third in its group and lacks sufficient points to secure an automatic qualification for the next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The team also faces difficulties in reaching the playoffs, as finishing in the top two positions appears increasingly unfeasible.
This growing global opposition to Israeli sports teams has created challenging circumstances for its athletes and supporters heading into 2025. Despite a historic peace proposal involving international leaders, the atmosphere surrounding Israeli participation in international competitions remains fraught.
Reports indicate that UEFA was considering a vote to suspend Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza back in September. However, that motion was ultimately placed on hold. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently stated that no action would be taken against the Israeli team following the peace proposal, which involved U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Despite assurances from various leaders, Israeli sports teams continue to experience exclusion and discrimination. For instance, Israel’s national gymnastics team encountered significant obstacles in October when they were denied visas to enter Indonesia for the World Gymnastics Championships. The Indonesian government cited security and safety concerns as the reason for the visa denial, although the Israel Gymnastics Federation’s spokesperson confirmed that the necessary security clearances were in place.
In England, the situation remains tense as well. Fans of the Israeli soccer team Maccabi Tel Aviv were barred from attending a recent match against Aston Villa due to safety apprehensions. Past incidents of violence against Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters during their match against Ajax in Amsterdam raised alarm among public officials.
Despite preventive measures, unrest erupted during the recent match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Aston Villa, with anti-Israel protesters gathering nearby. British police reported six arrests during this encounter, highlighting the fraught nature of current public sentiments. Approximately 200 protesters, including members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, gathered near Aston Villa Park, creating a charged atmosphere.
Beyond soccer, the Israeli cycling team known as Israel-Premier Tech suffered a setback as they lost their major sponsor. The Canadian company Premier Tech decided to terminate its partnership despite the team’s prior agreement to modify its branding by removing
