In a significant development, Israel has claimed to possess evidence connecting Hamas to the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is set to sail towards the Gaza Strip with climate activist Greta Thunberg on board.
On Tuesday, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs unveiled documents alleged to have been discovered in Gaza. These documents reportedly illustrate a direct connection between the flotilla’s leaders and the Hamas terrorist organization. The ministry’s announcement indicated that while Hamas manages operations within Gaza, it depends on the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, known as PCPA, to coordinate activities beyond Israel’s borders.
The ministry stated that the PCPA operates under the guise of a civilian organization. It reportedly plays a critical role on behalf of Hamas by organizing movements against Israel, which include violent protests and provocations like flotillas.
In its statement, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the PCPA’s strategy of utilizing general civilian cover in order to undertake various activities against Israel.
It is essential to note that Israel designated PCPA as a terrorist organization back in 2021 due to its strong affiliations with Hamas.
Among the documents Israel released, one key piece is a letter allegedly penned in 2021 by Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, who was assassinated in 2024. The letter reportedly expresses support for the PCPA and explicitly urges its chairman to foster unity among its members.
Additionally, Israel released a document that enumerates PCPA operatives, highlighting individuals whom Israel claims hold notable positions within Hamas. Among those identified is Zaher Birawi, characterized by Israel as the PCPA representative in the United Kingdom, known especially for orchestrating protest flotillas.
Reports from various media outlets, including the Times of Israel, indicate Birawi’s past involvement as a spokesperson for the 2010 Turkish Mavi Marmara flotilla, which engaged in a controversial confrontation with Israeli naval forces.
Israel further identified another operative, Saif Abu Kashk, claiming he is the CEO of the company Cyber Neptune. His firm has reportedly transitioned from real estate to focus on maritime operations, allegedly just prior to the flotilla’s scheduled departure.
Besides documented evidence, Israel shared images showing Birawi alongside Hamas leaders, along with one image featuring him with Greta Thunberg. These visuals have sparked further scrutiny regarding the activist’s affiliations.
Thunberg, who gained global recognition for her climate advocacy at a young age, has persistently denied any connections between her involvement in the flotilla and the Hamas organization. However, following the release of these documents, a GSF spokesperson, Maria Elena Delia, rebuffed claims linking the flotilla to Hamas, stating that the evidence does not establish any financial ties or operational control exerted by Hamas over the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Further complicating the discourse, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee issued a statement regarding the newly revealed documents. He expressed hope that media outlets would not fall for what he termed a ‘propaganda stunt’ orchestrated by Hamas supporters, including Thunberg.
Earlier this year, Thunberg faced her own challenges during another flotilla mission, which concluded with her deportation from Israel after Israeli naval forces detained her vessel.
As news of these allegations circulates, Fox News Digital has reached out to the Global Sumud Flotilla for commentary but has not yet received a response.
This situation raises broader implications about the intersections of activism, international relations, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The claims made by Israel invite important discussions regarding the ethical considerations surrounding activism in politically sensitive environments and the potential influence of organized groups on such initiatives.
