On Tuesday, Israel received the coffins of two hostages returned from Gaza through a Red Cross operation. Officials confirmed that the remains are set to be identified before being released to their grieving families. The military has reiterated its commitment to continue efforts to bring home all remaining captives.
According to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the coffins were transferred to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency inside Gaza. The remains will then be transported to Israel, where they will be received during a military ceremony led by the chief military rabbi.
Upon their arrival in Israel, the coffins will be placed under the jurisdiction of the National Center of Forensic Medicine, part of the Ministry of Health. This facility will carry out the identification process. Families of the deceased hostages will be formally notified once this process is concluded.
Netanyahu’s office has indicated that all families affected by this tragedy have been kept informed throughout the process. They have communicated their deepest sympathies and condolences for their losses.
The situation developed further as the remains of one identified hostage have been confirmed. Sgt. Maj. Tal Haimi, who served as a commander of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak’s rapid response team, was identified on the same day. His remains have been returned from Gaza after being held for over two years.
Haimi, aged 41 at the time of his death, was killed during combat while bravely defending Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak amidst the tragic events of October 7, 2023. Initially, his family believed he had been taken alive, but the IDF officially declared him deceased on December 13, 2023.
The IDF’s communication regarding Haimi’s remains has underscored the importance of proper burial for all deceased hostages. Following the identification, Netanyahu’s office extended condolences to Haimi’s family, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a dignified return for all hostages.
Netanyahu’s office has reiterated its plea for Hamas to release the remains of all deceased hostages for appropriate burial rites. They have emphasized the critical nature of these remains to the families seeking closure.
The IDF has echoed these sentiments, insisting that Hamas must fulfill its obligations as stipulated under the agreement brokered during the Trump administration.
On October 13, 2025, Israel welcomed the return of the last 20 living hostages following prolonged captivity lasting over two years. Since that time, the remains of 28 deceased hostages have gradually returned. However, 13 individuals, including U.S. citizens Itay Chen and Omer Neutra, along with soldier Hadar Goldin—whose body has been held since 2014—remain in Gaza.
The ongoing situation has prompted a significant response from the community, with calls for solidarity in support of the affected families. Netanyahu’s firm stance on bringing every hostage home continues to resonate among concerned citizens, emphasizing the pivotal nature of this issue within Israeli society.
The commitment to resolving hostage situations showcases the resolve of the Israeli government and military. As families await updates and outcomes from the identification process, the importance of closure weighs heavily on those impacted by this prolonged ordeal.
