Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has labeled today’s General Assembly conference focused on the question of Palestine as a charade. He confirmed that Israel will boycott the meeting and warned nations moving toward recognizing a Palestinian state that there will be serious repercussions.
In a press gathering at UN headquarters, just before a high-level session on advancing a two-state solution, Danon made it clear that Israel would not engage in the discussion. He accused the nations supporting recognition of Palestine of promoting terrorism rather than fostering peace.
We will not participate in this charade. We will not enter the General Assembly Hall, and we will not take part, he stated firmly.
France has pledged to recognize a Palestinian state during the General Assembly meeting on Tuesday, joining a notable shift among Israel’s longtime allies. This move signals a growing European trend toward supporting Palestinian statehood.
France stands out as the first major Western nuclear power and a permanent member of the UN Security Council from the G7 to formally acknowledge Palestine.
On Sunday, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom also expressed their support for Palestinian recognition. In recent months, Norway, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland have taken similar steps, citing factors such as the expansion of Israeli settlements and rising settler violence.
Danon conveyed strong warnings regarding the implications of recognition, stating that nations believing they are contributing to peace are actually supporting terrorism. There will be consequences for those actions, he declared emphatically.
While Danon did not specify the potential consequences, he left the door open to the possibility of extending Israeli control further into parts of the West Bank. This topic will be brought to the government after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has his discussion with President Donald Trump scheduled for September 29.
Danon noted that Israel is working closely with the United States regarding responses to allies recognizing Palestine. He indicated that Washington would also participate in the boycott of Monday’s General Assembly meeting on implementing a two-state solution.
The situation in Gaza remains tense, with global leaders calling for an end to the conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the meeting, stated that nothing justifies the ongoing war in Gaza. Everything compels us to definitively end it, he urged.
Macron’s statements reflect a growing impatience among world leaders regarding the violence. He emphasized the necessity of recognizing the existence of Israel while also advocating for justice for the Palestinians, saying, The time has come to do justice to the Palestinians, to recognize the state of Palestine.
We must do this to save lives, he added, highlighting the urgent need for action.
Amid these developments, Hamas has reportedly drafted a letter to President Donald Trump, requesting a guarantee for a 60-day cease-fire in exchange for the release of half of the hostages still held captive. This gesture suggests an openness to negotiations in what has been a stagnant peace process for nearly two years.
President Trump appears increasingly frustrated with the stalled peace efforts, which have resulted in around 40 Israelis remaining in Hamas’s custody. He is set to meet with a group of Arab leaders on Tuesday, where they are likely to urge him to apply pressure on Netanyahu to bring an end to the violence in Gaza.
The twin dynamics of escalating international support for Palestinian recognition and Israel’s unequivocal rejection of these movements underscore the urgent need for dialogue. Both sides must navigate the complexities of their positions while acknowledging the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
As global leaders begin to shift their stances towards Palestine, Israel’s firm rejection highlights the entrenched nature of this long-standing conflict. How this will unfold in the coming weeks and months could have significant implications for peace efforts, regional stability, and relations between Israel and its allies.
