UNITED NATIONS — Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon is urging the international community to break its silence regarding Hamas’ atrocities since the tragic events of October 7, 2023. This call comes in light of harrowing accounts from released hostages who endured brutal conditions during their captivity.
Danon emphasized the need for justice, stating, “We demand justice for all of them to come back. The U.N. should pass a resolution condemning Hamas.” He expressed disappointment that such a resolution has yet to be introduced since the conflict escalated.
Following the assaults on October 7, 2023, which marked the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, the U.N. has passed multiple resolutions concerning Israel. However, not one has specifically condemned Hamas or its actions.
Danon criticized the U.N.’s response, noting, “The U.N. has held countless emergency meetings on Israel and has passed endless resolutions. Yet, when terrorists massacre innocent children and mutilate their bodies, the U.N. remains silent.” His remarks resonate with those who have watched the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
His appeal for action follows Israel’s recent recovery of the bodies of Shiri Bibas, Ariel Bibas, Kfir Bibas, and Oded Lifshitz, raising further urgency regarding the situation.
Responding to a media inquiry, U.N. Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that, “Even without a specific resolution on Hamas, the Secretary-General has condemned their terror actions over 100 times in public remarks since October 7.” This underscores the complexity of the U.N.’s position amid ongoing violence.
Dujarric further remarked, “We condemn the shocking display of dead bodies, including the Bibas family, as abhorrent and appalling.” This public condemnation highlights the severity of the situation, yet many believe that more decisive action is necessary.
In terms of the Bibas children’s deaths, when asked about Israel’s perspective on how they were killed, Dujarric emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding their murder.
The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, revealed that forensic evidence indicates the children were killed in a brutal manner, noting that those responsible used their bare hands. Danon reiterated the harsh realities of the incident, stating the intention of the perpetrators was to mislead the public into believing the children died from an airstrike, a claim that Hamas made in November 2023.
During an emotional memorial for the Bibas family and Lifshitz, Danon stated, “This grief will echo throughout Jewish history. We will never forget. We will never forgive.” His words encapsulated the profound sorrow felt in the wake of these tragedies.
At the memorial, which featured a video tribute to the Bibas family before and during the attacks, remarks from Argentina’s U.N. Ambassador Francisco Fabián Tropepi resonated with many attendees.
Tropepi declared, “We cannot allow these atrocities to be forgotten. We cannot let the responsible parties go unpunished.” He further asserted that the horrific events of October 7 represented an unprecedented act of terrorism.
The Bibas family held dual citizenship in Israel and Argentina, prompting Argentine President Javier Milei to declare two days of mourning in memory of the slain mother and her children. This gesture underscores the international implications of the tragedy.
In a show of solidarity, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appreciated Milei’s declaration, suggesting it should inspire leaders globally to take action against such horrors.
Tropepi reiterated the commitment to continue advocating for justice, stating, “We will not cease our efforts until every hostage is returned home, until the forces of Hamas are dismantled, and until the world fully comprehends the extent of the horrors faced by the victims.”
The prolonged disconnect between U.N. resolutions and the reality of on-the-ground violence raises pressing questions about international accountability and the role of global institutions in responding effectively to acts of terror.
Moving forward, the international community faces a critical juncture: the need to unify in condemning violence while ensuring that the voices of victims like the Bibas family are heard. The path to justice appears fraught with challenges but requires unwavering resolve to prevent future tragedies.
