James Maslow’s Stand with Israel: An Artistic Response to Antisemitism

As an artist, I have dedicated my life to connecting with people through music. This medium has always allowed me to find common ground, especially when words fail. However, I have recently observed a troubling trend: the rise of antisemitism in America, which feels increasingly aggressive and pervasive. In Hollywood and the music industry, this has manifested as a boycott culture directed at Israel and the Jewish community. Rather than encouraging creativity and constructive dialogue, too many in the industry are severing ties, canceling collaborations, and unfairly vilifying an entire nation. This atmosphere is choking the spirit of artistic expression.

In response to this, I made a conscious decision to take an opposing stance. I am investing my efforts into a project that resonates deeply with me. My new single, “On My Mind,” pays homage to Israel and its people. Surprisingly, my commitment extends beyond writing the song; I filmed the music video on the very soil of Israel, collaborating with remarkable Israeli artists such as rapper Shahar Saul and singer Maya Dadon.

Rather than relying on studio sets or green screens, I chose the breathtaking landscapes of Israel as my backdrop—raw, authentic, and vibrant.

This project is more than mere music for me; it is an act of solidarity. In an entertainment sector where many are eager to criticize Israel, where calling for boycotts has become a trend, I stand alongside the only democracy in the Middle East. My affection for this nation and its people is steadfast.

Before anyone rushes to shout accusations of genocide or engage in another antisemitic tirade, I propose a simple challenge: visit Israel and witness it for yourself. The reality is not as one-dimensional as some narratives portray it.

Israel’s Rich Tapestry of Cultures

Israel is a land of immense diversity. Its inhabitants include Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze, Armenians, Ethiopians, and Bedouins—all coexisting, working, and debating side by side. The nation embodies a multitude of cultures and ideologies. The vibrancy of Israel is marked by passionate discussions, protests, and a cacophony of voices—often louder and more dynamic than what I have observed in America. This chaotic beauty illustrates that Israel is alive and free.

I wish more people recognized that Israel stands as the sole democracy in the region. It is a nation where women march without fear, LGBTQ rights are respected, and citizens actively engage in the democratic process. This is the place where the rule of law prevails over might.

Art and Activism Intersect

As an artist, I cannot sit idly by while the cultural landscape turns its back on Israel and the Jewish people. Remaining silent in this climate constitutes complicity. To me, music transcends entertainment; it serves as a powerful tool for communication. Thus, my song “On My Mind” transforms into a declaration of solidarity. It’s a message to the world that I acknowledge the ongoing challenges, and I refuse to align myself with the dissenters who seek to destroy rather than uplift.

Understandably, I expect backlash for my views. I have already faced criticism, with some suggesting that I should retreat into my artistic lane and refrain from addressing political issues. However, art has always had a political dimension. It serves to reveal truths, even when those truths are unpopular. Icons like Bob Dylan, U2, and Kendrick Lamar have all used their platforms to amplify critical messages. Why should my admiration for Israel and my stand against antisemitism be any exception?

The Normalization of Antisemitism

What alarms me most about the current climate surrounding antisemitism is how casually it has become normalized. We witness Jewish artists facing blacklisting, Jewish students encountering harassment, and Jewish institutions suffering acts of vandalism. Alarmingly, the cultural community often appears indifferent. That’s precisely why I refuse to be quiet. I have chosen to stand in Israel, to perform there, and to film there because I believe in the significance of this nation and its people.

Humanity Above Politics

It is essential for my fans to recognize that this issue transcends politics; it fundamentally pertains to our shared humanity. We should support a people who, post-Holocaust, constructed a homeland from nothing and transformed a desert into a hub of innovation. Israel contributes massively to art, science, and medicine—disproportionately for a nation of its size. It’s crucial to see through the prevailing misconceptions and understand that Israel is not the antagonist but rather a nation fighting for survival in a hostile environment.

A Call for Artistic Integrity

To fellow artists who maintain a distance due to fear of backlash when collaborating with Israeli counterparts, I urge you to reconsider. Art is fundamentally about transcending barriers, not erecting them. It is meant to heal rather than divide. If you allow antisemitism to dictate your artistic choices, you compromise the very essence of your art.

“On My Mind” embodies my response to these challenges. It represents my refusal to be intimidated and my commitment to speak up. I love Israel, I support the Jewish community, and I firmly believe in the ability of music to convey authentic truths.

To those who continue to shout accusations of genocide without ever visiting Israel, I reiterate my challenge: experience it for yourself. Walk its streets, interact with its diverse populace, and witness firsthand the resilience and freedom intrinsic to this democracy. Doing so may very well change your perspective and place Israel in your thoughts too.
