Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a progressive Democrat from Texas, is taking assertive steps to rein in President Donald Trump’s immigration policies through a new piece of legislation aimed at increasing transparency concerning federal deportation flights.
The proposed legislation, known as the Transparency Requirements for Aircraft Carriers to Know Immigration Conduct and Enforcement Act, or TRACK ICE Act, was unveiled this week. The bill has been co-sponsored by Rep. Dan Goldman from New York, another prominent Democrat who has often found himself at odds with Trump.
This bill seeks to simplify the process of tracking detention and deportation flights orchestrated by the federal government. It also mandates the inclusion of detailed transparency disclosures regarding the individuals who are detained during these flights.
In a recent statement regarding her proposed legislation, Crockett emphasized the significant lack of transparency in the government’s handling of immigration-related flights. She highlighted that these so-called ghost flights leave families distressed and in the dark while providing immigration authorities with unchecked power. The introduction of this bill comes amid a broader Democratic movement to establish new limitations on the operations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), particularly following intense protests in Minneapolis. Demonstrations erupted in the city after an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good while she was in her car.
While some in the Trump administration accused Good of obstructing ICE duties at the time of her death, Democrats have asserted that the agent’s actions were reckless and merit a full investigation.
Crockett’s TRACK ICE Act aims to enhance accountability by requiring that information on immigration flights executed by ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) be made public within a 72-hour window following the flights. This includes essential details such as the aircraft identification code, departure and arrival times, as well as mission designations assigned to ICE Air.
Moreover, the bill stipulates that details concerning detainees must also be disclosed. This information encompasses their nationality, age group, sex, and family status, aimed at shedding light on the conditions surrounding these deportation processes.
Opponents of the bill have raised concerns that mandating ICE to release extensive information might put agents and the individuals they target at risk. Nevertheless, proponents argue that the agency has operated with excessive freedom, which poses risks to communities.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been approached for commentary regarding the bill, but no response has been issued as of yet.
Since Trump’s administration began, deportation flights have surged dramatically, with data showing a 44% increase between 2024 and 2025. This rise in immigration enforcement has drawn considerable scrutiny and criticism from various advocacy groups and community members alike, highlighting the urgent need for transparency in government operations related to immigration.
