Jason Momoa’s Near-Death Surfing Experience in Maui: A Tale of Survival

Jason Momoa, the renowned star of the blockbuster film Aquaman, recently shared a terrifying personal experience that took place during a surfing trip in Maui. The actor recounted his near-drowning incident in vivid detail on the latest episode of the podcast SmartLess, revealing the inherent dangers of ocean sports.

Momoa described his 2007 adventure where things took a turn for the worse. While surfing at the perilous Peʻahi break, known as Jaws for its colossal waves, he faced a life-threatening situation when his equipment failed. “I was doing this paddle, we went in at Jaws,” he recalled, sharing how he paddled incessantly for approximately 13 miles along the coast.

Suddenly, a critical mishap occurred. His surf leash snapped, leaving him vulnerable and adrift about seven miles offshore. He explained the chaos of the moment. “You’re kind of almost a mile offshore, and then my leash snapped. It’s so windy on Maui,” he noted, highlighting the fierce conditions he was battling.

During this fierce struggle against the oncoming tide, Momoa’s extensive water training provided him with temporary relief. He admitted, “I was trained pretty well, so I was fine,” yet the monstrous waves posed a significant threat. With waves towering at about 10 feet, he found himself half a mile from safety, grappling with exhaustion and despair.

As the waves crashed violently around him, Momoa reached an alarming realization. Stranded on the outer reef, he recognized that his friends could not see his frantic attempts to signal for help. “I had my paddle and I was waving it and they couldn’t see me, and the waves were so big,” he said, capturing the desperate nature of his situation.

The fear of never returning to his infant daughter stirred within him. “When my thoughts turned to my daughter Lola, who was just three months old at the time, I just lost it, I was like, ‘Oh s—.’” It was a moment laden with vulnerability, where his thoughts spiraled into worst-case scenarios.

Stranded, battered, and alone, Momoa found himself at a breaking point. “I was out there for a while, and I just couldn’t see anyone coming to get me. I couldn’t move anymore, and my arms and my legs gave up… My body stopped,” he recounted, emphasizing the dramatic physical toll that the ordeal took on him. It was an unimaginable realization for him – at what he presumed was the end of his life, he was left screaming internally.

Yet, as hope began to fade, a friend suddenly spotted him. Realizing he had to fight through the treacherous surf, Momoa summoned his remaining strength. “I get back on the board and we start paddling. He’s like, ‘You got to go out,’ so we just keep paddling out,” he explained, showcasing his resilience in the face of near-certain defeat.

The two friends faced yet another hurdle when they were thrown from their boards by rogue waves and powerful currents. With seven grueling miles still left to cover, exhaustion set in. Momoa admitted, “My feet are covered in blood. And I’m just literally [with] my ancestors just paddling the rest of this way, head down and we get out.”

Ultimately, the Hollywood actor managed to return to shore, a testament to his fighting spirit and determination against overwhelming odds.

In the aftermath of this harrowing experience, Momoa has been in the news for both his personal life and professional endeavors. Recently, he has been seen dating actress Adria Arjona, after they collaborated on the 2021 film Sweet Girl. Their relationship went public in May 2024, marking a new chapter in his life.

Momoa’s past relationships have also drawn attention, particularly his marriage to Lisa Bonet. They tied the knot in 2017 but separated in 2020, with both agreeing to share joint custody of their children, daughter Lola and son Nakoa-Wolf. These developments have contributed to the ongoing narrative surrounding the actor’s life, blending his professional achievements with personal trials.

This remarkable story offers insights not only into the risks associated with surfing but also into Momoa’s resilience and commitment to his loved ones. His harrowing experience fosters understanding about the unpredictable nature of the ocean while emphasizing the endurance within individuals to confront overwhelming challenges.

As Momoa continues his journey in Hollywood and navigates the complexities of fatherhood, his past serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the strong bonds that drive one to persevere against all odds. The actor’s experience resonates deeply within anyone who has faced fear and uncertainty in their lives, highlighting the importance of hope and survival.
