Vice President JD Vance highlighted the significant strides made towards establishing a robust U.S.-India trade deal during his speech on Tuesday. He asserted that a firm partnership between the current administration and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is crucial for fostering a prosperous and peaceful 21st century.
During his remarks in Jaipur, India, Vance voiced concerns about potential risks in the Indo-Pacific region, cautioning against a decline in collaboration between the United States and India. He warned that failing to unite could usher in a “dark time” for global stability.
Vance stated, “Critics have berated my president, President Trump, for initiating a trade war aimed at reclaiming past jobs. However, this perception is misleading.” He continued by underscoring Trump’s assertive tariff strategies and dedication to rejuvenating U.S. manufacturing sectors, emphasizing that the objective remains to restore balance in global trade, allowing nations like India and the U.S. to collaboratively build a better future.
Earlier this year, President Trump and Modi set an ambitious target, aiming to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, reinforcing the commitment to enhance economic ties.
Significant Progress on Trade Agreements
Vance elaborated that both governments are diligently working on a trade agreement rooted in mutual priorities, such as job creation and bolstering durable supply chains. He expressed enthusiasm over recent discussions with Modi, stating, “In our meeting yesterday, we made notable headway on these issues. We are thrilled to announce that America and India have successfully established the terms of reference for the trade negotiations. This development is pivotal for achieving the vision that President Trump and Prime Minister Modi share.”
This step, regarded as a roadmap towards a final agreement, indicates vast possibilities for collaboration between the two nations. Vance stated, “I am confident in what America and India can achieve together.”
On a personal note, Vance shared that this visit marked his first journey to the birthplace of his wife’s parents. The vice president, along with the second lady and their three children, enjoyed an evening meal with Modi, further personalizing the diplomatic engagement.
Reflecting on the children’s impressions, Vance remarked, “Our kids have developed a rapport with two world leaders: Trump and Modi. They met Modi for the first time in February at the AI Action Summit in Paris. It speaks volumes that they appreciate his character, as children are often brutally honest and keen judges of personality.”
The Nature of Negotiations
Vance acknowledged Modi’s reputation as a rigorous negotiator, one who fiercely champions India’s economic interests. He stated, “President Trump and I respect Prime Minister Modi for his tenacity in negotiations. We do not hold any past American leaders responsible for prioritizing another country’s industrial growth over our own; however, we are determined to rectify this with mutual benefits for both the U.S. and India.”
During his address, Vance subtly alluded to the geopolitical landscape shaped by nations like China without mentioning them directly. He stressed the importance of the ongoing trade negotiations, saying, “This audience knows that neither Americans nor Indians operate in isolation when aiming to enhance their manufacturing capacities.” He emphasized that competition transcends beyond inexpensive consumer goods, extending into vital sectors such as munitions, energy infrastructure, and cutting-edge technologies.
Vance warned of severe repercussions if both nations fall behind in these aspects, stating, “Should our nations fail to keep pace, the repercussions will extend well beyond the Indo-Pacific, affecting global stability overall.”
A Vision for the Future
Vance firmly believes in the positive relationship between a stronger India and heightened economic prosperity, reinforcing stability across the Indo-Pacific region. He articulated, “A successful partnership between India and the United States can ensure a future that is both prosperous and peaceful. Conversely, our inability to collaborate effectively could result in a very dark century ahead for humanity.”
In previous discussions, Vance remarked that past American administrations approached Modi’s government with a dismissive tone, criticizing India as merely a source of inexpensive labor. He noted that the Trump administration is pivoting away from this outdated perspective, recognizing the importance of energy independence for both nations.
Vance emphasized that the U.S. is endowed with vast resources and a unique ability to generate energy, which could significantly benefit India. He remarked, “India stands to gain from increased access to U.S. energy exports, subsequently allowing for enhanced production capabilities and reduced energy costs.”
Moreover, he expressed the commitment to assist India in exploring its significant natural resources, including offshore natural gas reserves. In conjunction with outlining energy goals, Vance intertwined these aspirations with India’s ambitions in artificial intelligence. He stressed, “There is no future in AI without energy security and dominance.”
Vance concluded by asserting the mutual benefits of expanding trade relations, stating, “Americans seek broader access to Indian markets, recognizing India as an advantageous business environment, while Indians will flourish from enhanced commerce in the United States. This partnership promises a win-win scenario that will endure well into the future.”
