During a quest for tranquility, actor Jerry O’Connell recently encountered an unexpected and unsettling situation in a Los Angeles yoga studio. While participating in a class aimed at finding inner peace, O’Connell discovered that serenity was overshadowed by an unfortunate theft.
The 51-year-old television host, known for his role in the game show ‘Pictionary’, reported that an unidentified woman pilfered his belongings, which included his wallet and phone. According to O’Connell, the theft occurred while he was engrossed in a yoga session.
The incident, which O’Connell has humorously termed the work of a ‘yoga bandit’, involved the woman requesting to use the studio’s restroom. However, it was later revealed that she was not late for class as she claimed. After the class concluded, O’Connell discovered that his valuables were missing, despite the studio’s lockers being locked.
“It made no sense that my items were gone considering the security measures in place,” O’Connell shared in an interview. He described how he is accustomed to placing his wallet and phone inside his old sneakers before starting each class, a routine he has followed for many sessions. His commitment is evident, as he noted that his yoga tracking app recorded 107 classes.
With a sense of disbelief, O’Connell approached the studio staff to report the theft in a discreet manner, reflecting his desire to maintain a peaceful atmosphere despite the troubling incident. The studio acted promptly; the Los Angeles Police Department was notified, and security footage captured the entire event.
According to O’Connell, the footage clearly shows the culprit. “We reviewed the feed and saw her with pigtails wearing yoga attire and carrying her mat,” he stated. The video revealed her using a clever ruse—pretending to be late for class before seizing his possessions.
The aftermath of the theft was swift. O’Connell revealed that the woman charged nearly $500 at a department store and an additional $100 at a gas station within moments of the theft. Fortunately, his credit card company was quick to respond, issuing him a new card to prevent further unauthorized transactions.
Unfortunately for O’Connell, this was not an isolated incident. Reports indicated that the woman in question has a history of stealing from various yoga studios, making her a repeat offender. O’Connell revealed that police investigations suggested she had previously visited the studio multiple times, perhaps scouting for suitable opportunities to steal.
The emotional toll of the theft extended beyond financial loss for O’Connell. He lamented the personal items that were in his wallet, which included a sentimental photo of his wife, Rebecca Romijn, from her high school days, a unique four-leaf clover gifted by fellow actor Jack McBrayer, a $2 bill from filming ‘Stand By Me’, and an obituary of his grandfather. Additionally, some Powerball lottery tickets he had stored in his wallet were also taken.
O’Connell humorously speculated on the nature of the lottery winnings, teasingly pondering whether a potential jackpot would belong to him or the yoga bandit if his tickets were redeemed. He also pointed out the challenges of selling his Android phone, which had limited resale value.
Despite the theft and its implications, O’Connell’s commitment to his yoga practice remained unshaken. He returned to the studio following the incident, determined to continue his journey toward fitness and well-being.
“I was back today and took a class. Shout out to Zack, my yoga teacher – I can touch my toes because of him!” he remarked with humor, showcasing his resilience and dedication to personal growth.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, even in spaces typically associated with relaxation and peace. O’Connell’s experience highlights how theft can occur in unexpected places, prompting both studios and patrons to consider enhanced security measures.
As for O’Connell, he appears to have found his balance again, returning to the mat despite the unsettling experience, proving that even a ‘yoga bandit’ cannot steal one’s inner peace.
