Jewish Organizations Urge Caution as Zohran Mamdani Prepares for Mayor of New York City

As self-identified democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani prepares to take the helm of America’s most populous city, Jewish organizations are voicing their concerns. The UJA-Federation of New York, JCRC-NY, ADL New York/New Jersey, AJC New York, and the New York Board of Rabbis have released a joint statement following Mamdani’s election victory.

They stated that New Yorkers have spoken by choosing Mamdani as the next Mayor of New York City. The organizations acknowledge a variety of issues that motivated voters, yet they contend that Mamdani’s core beliefs directly contradict the community’s deepest convictions and values. Their statement emphasizes the need for reconciliation and sensitivity from the incoming mayor.

“We call on Mayor-elect Mamdani and all elected officials to govern with humility, inclusivity, and a deep respect for the diversity of views and experiences that define our city,” the statement reads. As with every other elected official, we will evaluate the mayor-elect based on his actions towards ensuring the safety of Jewish New Yorkers.”

Statistics from 2023, provided by the UJA-Federation of New York, reveal that nearly 1 million Jewish individuals reside in New York City. Brooklyn has the largest Jewish population, with around 462,000 residents, followed by Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx.
