Former Senator Joe Manchin, an Independent from West Virginia, recently expressed disappointment over how President Joe Biden’s leadership has been shaped by far-left advisors, rather than drawing on the more moderate principles that characterized his long political career.
Biden’s extensive tenure in American politics culminated in a presidency some view as overly influenced by a liberal agenda misaligned with the views of mainstream voters. In a November 2021 interview, Manchin articulated his desire for Biden to adopt a more centrist approach, stating, “Be normal and stop the chaos.” He emphasized that American voters do not overwhelmingly identify with a left-leaning agenda, suggesting instead, “We are a center-right country, if anything.”
As we look towards the challenges facing the Democratic Party in 2025, particularly in the wake of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s electoral loss, Manchin provided insights on recent political developments during an appearance on the “All-In” podcast.
Initially, Manchin expressed reservations about the makeup of Biden’s staff, stating, “I said, ‘Mr. President, you have the most liberal staff that I’ve ever seen.'” Manchin claims he voiced these concerns during his first visit to the White House. Biden reportedly responded, “Well, Joe, they tell me I have the most diversified staff.” However, Manchin clarified that he was more concerned about ideological extremism than diversity, referring to some staff members as “bats— crazy.”
ATLANTIC RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT DEMOCRATS AND MODERATION
Manchin maintained that Ron Klain, once Biden’s chief of staff, assembled the team he believes pushed the president too far to the left. Manchin insists he repeatedly cautioned that the administration had strayed too far from its centrist roots. He asserted, “You’ve never been this far left,” and emphasized the mounting pressures faced by Biden.
Despite his criticism, Manchin acknowledged Biden’s character, proclaiming him a good man. Yet he lamented that the president appeared to have “lost the will to fight” against the radical elements within his administration.
Responding to Manchin’s assertions, Klain defended the administration’s policies as aligned with the platform upon which Biden campaigned. According to Klain, every Democratic senator backed those initiatives, except for Manchin. He described the staff as “mainstream Democratic” and rebuffed claims that the agenda was overly influenced by liberal ideologies. Klain claimed that crucial initiatives like the child tax credit and paid family leave enjoy broad support among the American public.
Manchin countered Klain’s defense by shedding light on the struggles involved in governing when there is discord within the team. He explained, “I know how much energy it takes if you’ve got to fight with your staff every day to do the things you want.” Manchin expressed frustration over the lack of follow-through on agreements made with Biden, suggesting that Klain was directing the administration’s course without adequate support for moderate initiatives.
During the podcast, he reflected on his initial optimism about Biden’s presidency and how his enthusiasm quickly evaporated. “I think, ‘Boy, we got it now,” Manchin recalled. He described Biden’s early challenges in Iowa and New Hampshire, calling them disastrous. Manchin speculated that Biden made a deal with more radical elements during this tumultuous period and seemed to suggest that this deal led to an alignment with far-left priorities that he never intended to pursue.
Addressing discussions around Biden’s potential relinquishment of the nomination, Manchin highlighted the significance of moderating immigration policies, believing that the party’s lack of balance on this issue could jeopardize its future. He posed a thought-provoking analogy, asking, “Do you need a strong border?” Manchin compared the need for border security to personal property lines, suggesting the necessity of protecting one’s residence should extend to national borders.
He stated, “Why can’t we protect our borders while also maintaining a legal immigration policy that functions?” This encapsulates Manchin’s stance that many Democrats share his views but feel constrained by the party’s current trajectory.
Ultimately, if the Democratic Party does not recalibrate its approach and address the fears surrounding immigration and moderation, Manchin warned, they are at risk of electoral defeats in future elections.
Fox News Digital attempted to obtain comments from former President Biden’s office but did not receive a response immediately.
THE ROAD AHEAD FOR MODERATE DEMOCRATS
The narrative emerging from Manchin’s reflections offers important insights into the internal conflicts within the Democratic Party. As the Democratic Party looks to unify its disparate factions, the challenge remains balancing progressive ambitions with the demands of more centrist voters. Achieving this balance is essential for any path forward that can reclaim lost support among American constituents. With the political landscape continuously shifting, leaders like Manchin highlight the importance of reassessing party values to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving political climate.
