EXCLUSIVE – In a heartfelt humanitarian gesture, Jordan successfully evacuated sixteen Palestinian children from Gaza, including ten suffering from cancer. The evacuation took place on Wednesday as part of a larger initiative aimed at providing critical medical assistance to civilians impacted by the ongoing conflict in the region.
The effort is part of a broader initiative referred to as the Jordan Medical Corridor. This initiative was established by King Abdullah II during a significant meeting with President Donald Trump in February, where discussions focused on improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
A Jordanian source emphasized the nation’s commitment, stating that “Jordan is keen to bring more child patients from Gaza in each evacuation batch and to expedite the process.” However, they acknowledged the complexities posed by technical and logistical hurdles faced by the World Health Organization as well as restrictions imposed by Israel.
Despite facing numerous challenges, the Jordanian initiative successfully facilitated the departure of 64 Palestinians from Gaza on Wednesday, indicating a growing commitment to humanitarian efforts. Among those evacuated was a fragile 5-month-old baby suffering from severe malnutrition. Additional patients included a 6-year-old with serious burns from an explosive injury and a 2-year-old battling blood cancer.
This recent operation featured the transportation of four patients via helicopter from the Israel-Jordan border. Upon arrival in Amman, the evacuated children will receive comprehensive medical care and housing until their treatment is fully complete. However, two of the children are set to be flown to other neighboring countries for further assistance.
The current mandate from Jordan aims to evacuate a total of 2,000 children from the Palestinian enclave. Simultaneously, Jordan continues its internal initiatives to provide field hospital treatments and humanitarian aid to those still trapped within Gaza. The situation remains dire, making it increasingly difficult to ensure the safety of these young patients and their families during transit.
An official from Israel corroborated the success of this evacuation at the Kerem Shalom crossing in the southern Gaza Strip. This coordinated effort highlights a degree of collaboration between Jordan and Israel, which persists despite the numerous security challenges both nations face in the region.
Earlier in the conflict, Jordan demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian aid by deploying C-130 aircraft to deliver food supplies into Gaza. The aircraft dropped pallets affixed with large parachutes, with some of these operations coordinated with U.S. Central Command. This history sets a precedent for continued collaborative efforts in providing necessary aid to those affected by the ongoing crisis.
As the conflict persists, now spanning more than 600 days, regional dialogues continue to search for a ceasefire. Conversations surrounding this aim to alleviate the ongoing suffering of Palestinian civilians while also addressing the tragic plight of the 55 hostages held by Hamas.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II has taken a firm stance against any discussions of forced displacement of Palestinians residing in Gaza. His comments reflect a broader commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees while also advocating for peaceful resolutions to the ongoing conflict.
As the situation evolves, it becomes increasingly crucial for the international community to stay informed and engaged. Humanitarian initiatives like the one led by Jordan shed light on the need for collective action to protect the most vulnerable populations in conflict zones. The plight of these children emphasizes the urgent need for solidarity and support from those in positions of influence to find a path towards peace and healing.
