Josh Duhamel Embraces Off-Grid Living in Minnesota, Finding Peace Away from Hollywood

Hollywood actor Josh Duhamel has chosen a different path, leaving the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles for a serene off-grid lifestyle in Minnesota. For over 15 years, Duhamel has painstakingly built a home deep in the woods, finding solace and connection with nature.

Duhamel, age 52, shared his motivations for relocating in a recent interview. He stated that part of the reason he created his retreat in Minnesota was its isolation from the frenetic pace of city life. Duhamel explained that the nearest store is a staggering 40 miles away, emphasizing the importance of community and quality time spent with loved ones. He said, “Once we get there, it’s really about everybody taking care of each other—making memories, spending time with family and friends.”

Reconnecting with Nature and Family

The journey to create this off-grid sanctuary took years, but Duhamel remains grateful for the experience. He expressed the value of ‘getting back to the basics,’ stating, “You’re not consumed by all these other distractions. When you’re out there, it’s really about having fun, making sure everybody’s warm, and that everyone has food and water.” This philosophy has transformed his lifestyle.

Duhamel shares his tranquil retreat with his wife, Audra Mari, and their young son, Sheperd, along with his 11-year-old son Axl from his previous marriage. He noted, “My son is going to have memories of this place forever. He’s not on his iPad when he’s out there. He’s out there in the boat with me, or he’s playing soccer on the beach, or he’s out there in the woods doing whatever I’m doing.”

A Legacy of Connection

As he reflects on his life, Duhamel hopes to pass this experience to future generations. He stated, “I have a little baby who’s going to experience the same thing. Someday, I hope to pass this on to them so they can share it with their kids. It’s really important to me that they have this. It’s not just about having all the amenities and luxuries we’ve gotten used to. It’s really about family. It’s about legacy.”

Stepping Away from Hollywood

Duhamel has been open about his feelings toward Hollywood, discussing his disinterest in the industry during a 2023 interview with Graham Bensinger. He remarked, “I don’t think I ever really got comfortable with all of it. It was just a lot. I missed the simplicity of who I really am.”

Duhamel acknowledged that the traditional Hollywood lifestyle, including red carpets and celebrity events, left him feeling disconnected. He admitted, “I don’t hate it. I’m better at it now than I was, but it just took me a long time to really feel like I belong, like I fit in.” He added that the pressures of Hollywood have a way of draining one’s spirit, stating, “You know Hollywood and L.A., that whole lifestyle can suck the soul out of you if you’re not careful.”

A Diverse Career Journey

Duhamel’s career began in modeling before he transitioned into acting with a role on the soap opera “All My Children.” He skyrocketed to fame with his performance in the series “Las Vegas,” gaining recognition across the entertainment industry. His role as Colonel William Lennox in the highly successful “Transformers” franchise further solidified his place in Hollywood.

Personal Reflections on Marriage and Growth

In reflecting on his marriage to singer Fergie, Duhamel acknowledged that their differing approaches to fame contributed to the end of their eight-year union. Duhamel and Fergie married in 2009 but finalized their divorce in 2019. Discussing their relationship, he said, “We had a great time, but I think we kind of just outgrew each other and had very different interests. The older I got, the more I wanted to come back here … [but] this is not for her. But I’ve got no hard feelings for it. I truly don’t.”

He expressed gratitude for Fergie’s kindness, stating, “I’m very lucky that she’s a kind human, I really am.” This perspective highlights Duhamel’s growth and acceptance of life’s changes.

Finding Fulfillment Beyond Fame

Ultimately, Josh Duhamel’s choice to leave Hollywood signifies a deeper search for fulfillment. His move to a secluded life in Minnesota reflects a desire for authenticity, family connection, and a meaningful legacy. As he embraces a simpler lifestyle, Duhamel reminds us all of the value of prioritizing what truly matters—family, nature, and lasting memories.
