Joy in Tel Aviv as Hostage Deal Brings Hope, Trump Lauded

Hope and Celebration Emerge in Tel Aviv Following Hostage Deal

TEL AVIV: On Thursday, Tel Aviv came alive as citizens gathered in Hostages Square, transforming two years of anguish into a celebration of hope. This gathering marked the announcement of a significant deal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with former President Donald Trump playing a pivotal role.

“I am overjoyed, overwhelmed, happy — all the good feelings in the world,” shared Daniel Lifshitz, expressing his emotions amid the jubilant crowd. He stood in a square filled with love and gratitude toward Trump’s efforts to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Tragically, Lifshitz’s own family faced tremendous loss. His grandfather, Oded Lifshitz, was taken captive from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, only to lose his life during captivity. His remains were finally returned home for burial in February 2025.

“When your loved one is a deceased hostage, your soul can’t rest,” he explained. “You don’t know what to do; you don’t have a place to mourn. You can’t invent a grave and go there.” Lifshitz articulated the dual emotions of grief and joy that many felt on this historic day.

He continued, stating, “There’s the fear that some of the hostages won’t return on their feet, that some of the bodies won’t be found. We will be here until the last one is brought home, but today is a holiday.” These powerful words echoed the sentiments of countless families yearning for resolution and closure.

Trump’s Role in the Agreement

On Wednesday, Trump announced the agreement, which signified the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s tumultuous history. He expressed, “This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a strong, durable and everlasting peace.”

The excitement in Hostages Square was palpable as supporters adorned themselves with Trump face masks and waved U.S. flags. The atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm as onlookers captured moments with cameras, chanting, “The people of Israel live,” all while the country awaited the return of hostages abducted by Hamas over 733 long days ago.

Among those celebrating was Galit Even-Chen. “I feel the need to identify with happiness,” she shared, fighting back tears. “To share in the families’ joy, to be here and believe that it’s really happening.”

Even-Chen emphasized the ongoing trauma many are still experiencing. “Until the last hostage comes back, it’s not over. We are still in trauma; we’re not even post-trauma yet. We still need to understand what happened here. It feels unreal — and today is a kind of catharsis, a relief that we are beginning something better.”

Expressions of Gratitude

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum Headquarters expressed profound appreciation for Trump’s leadership, highlighting his determination that led to what they termed a “historic breakthrough.” Their statement read, “There are 48 hostages still held by Hamas. Our moral and national duty is to bring them all home, both the living and the fallen.”

This sentiment resonated throughout the square as families held on to hope for the safe return of their loved ones. The call for the healing and renewal of Israeli society remained at the forefront of discussions, reflecting a collective yearning for peace.

Harrosh Menashe, the uncle of hostage Elkana Bohbot, who was captured during the Supernova festival on October 7 and is believed to be alive, articulated the relief many in the community felt. “We already feel somewhat lighter, not as heavy as before. We hope to return to what we once were — but it must happen as soon as possible.”

He added a note of caution, stating, “For now, we’re floating in the air; we need to stay grounded and watch how things unfold.” His words captured the delicate balance between hope and reality faced by families of the captives.

Preparation for Hostage Returns

The Israeli military has begun preparations for receiving the living hostages at the Re’im base, strategically located near the Gaza border. Officials have created a dedicated area for medical evaluations and personal care to ensure their well-being before they reunite with their families. Subsequently, the freed captives will be transported to hospitals across Israel, where departments have already been cleared to receive them.

In a remarkable turn of events, families of the hostages reached out to the Norwegian Nobel Committee earlier in the week, requesting that Trump receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in facilitating peace in a situation deemed impossible by many.

The heartfelt letter acknowledged Trump’s substantial contributions over the past year, stating, “In this past year, no leader or organization has contributed more to peace around the world than President Trump. While many have spoken eloquently about peace, he has achieved it.” This appeal encapsulated a growing belief in his capacity as a peace broker.

On the second anniversary of the tragic October 7 massacre, Trump and First Lady Melania conveyed their gratitude to the forum in a heartfelt letter. “My entire administration has been touched by the fact that, through the unimaginable pain and suffering of spending two years not knowing where your loved ones are, you have continued telling their stories and advocating on their behalf,” Trump wrote.

A New Dawn for Israel

The atmosphere in Tel Aviv is one of cautious optimism as the nation stands at the precipice of change. The successful negotiation may represent a turning point not only for the hostages but for Israeli society as a whole. The hope that springs from this deal offers a glimmer of light in a region long plagued by conflict.

As families look forward to the reunions with their loved ones, the message remains clear. The journey toward peace is ongoing, and today serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and community. In a world filled with uncertainty, the unity and hope displayed in Tel Aviv signal a renewed commitment to healing and reconciliation.
