Julian Sayin Named Starting Quarterback for Ohio State’s Season Opener Against Texas

The Ohio State Buckeyes officially announced on Monday that Julian Sayin will start as quarterback in their 2025 season opener against the Texas Longhorns. This decision signals the program’s confidence in Sayin as they begin their quest to defend their national championship title.

The highly anticipated game is set to take place on August 30 and will be broadcast on FOX. In a notable matchup, Texas will field Arch Manning as their starting quarterback, adding to the excitement of the event.

Sayin Emerges Victorious in a Competitive Quarterback Battle

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day confirmed that Sayin’s consistent performance during training camp distinguished him from his competitor, Lincoln Kienholz. Day noted that the competition had narrowed down in recent weeks, asserting that Sayin earned the starting role through diligent practice.

Day shared his perspective with reporters, stating, “It was a close competition. I think both guys we all feel confident can win a game for us. I feel like our guys are confident with both quarterbacks, and I believe we will need both quarterbacks as the season progresses. Lincoln did a lot of great things, but we’re going to name Julian the starter, give him the majority of the reps with the ones and go prepare to beat Texas.”

A Promising Future for Sayin

At this point, Sayin is listed as a sophomore but possesses four years of eligibility remaining. He joined Ohio State in January 2024 after transferring from Alabama, making a significant career move in pursuit of greater opportunities and growth.

Reflecting on his journey, Sayin emphasized the importance of earning trust through consistency. He stated, “Earning trust is just all about consistency; who are you day in and day out, and are you making the routine plays routinely? Are you someone whom the offense can count on and who your teammates can count on consistently?”

Sayin’s Stellar Background

Sayin entered Ohio State with an impressive pedigree as a five-star prospect. He ranked as the top quarterback in his recruitment class, showcasing his skill as a standout player at Carlsbad High School in California. His achievements in high school positioned him as a player to watch in collegiate football.

Texas Coaches Recognize Sayin’s Talents

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian also offered commendations for Sayin during his recruitment process. Sarkisian remarked, “We recruited him hard here. He was a very gifted passer, really good player. He came to camp with us, I think, two years in a row, so we got a lot of familiarity with him. He is a very good player; he has elite passing skills, exceptional arm talent, a quick release, and high accuracy. With the great weapons surrounding him at Ohio State, he is the type of guy who can leverage those assets effectively against challenging defenses like ours.”

Strong Supporting Cast at Ohio State

As Sayin steps into the starting role, he will benefit from a wealth of offensive talent. The return of prominent wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate adds depth to the Buckeyes’ offensive strategy. This lineup ensures Sayin has numerous options to exploit defenses, enhancing his chances for immediate success.

As the Buckeyes prepare to face the Longhorns, the excitement around this matchup grows. Fans are eager to see how Sayin will perform as he steps into the spotlight, ready to lead Ohio State into a new chapter of their football journey.
