Baseball enthusiasts were left astounded on Monday evening as they tuned into the MLB Home Run Derby and witnessed an unprecedented event—an outfield ballboy snatching a home run from a player.
This jaw-dropping incident unfolded during the final round of the derby, where Tampa Bay Rays slugger Junior Caminero faced off against Seattle Mariners’ star Cal Raleigh. Caminero launched a powerful shot towards left field, but in an unexpected twist, one of the usually passive outfielders, tasked with retrieving wayward balls, managed to take a home run away from the Rays player.
The ESPN commentary team referenced a similar moment from about 40 years ago when Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg experienced a similar fate. However, in Sandberg’s case, a high school baseball team was out in the field shagging baseballs at the time.
Despite the shocking play, fans were left reeling from the moment. Caminero remained competitive throughout the contest but ultimately fell short against Raleigh. The final score settled at 18-15 in favor of Raleigh.
Raleigh made history by becoming the first catcher to win the event since its inception four decades ago. Additionally, he is now the second Mariners player to claim victory, following the legendary Ken Griffey Jr., who was present in the dugout, having been the sole player from Seattle to achieve this feat before.
Cal Raleigh, popularly known as “Big Dumper,” highlighted the significance of this victory by expressing how childhood dreams often come to life. His father shared heartfelt sentiments, stating, “Anyone who has played baseball as a child dreams of these kinds of moments. I dreamed of it. He dreamed of it. As a parent, you want your kids to experience joy like this.”
Raleigh’s journey to the final round was no easy task. He advanced following a nail-biting tiebreaker against Athletics’ Brent Rooker, where Raleigh’s longer home run of 470.61 feet edged out Rooker’s 470.53 feet.
Looking ahead, Raleigh will represent the Mariners at the All-Star Game on Tuesday. The prestigious event will take place at Truist Park, the home ground of the Atlanta Braves, and will be broadcast live on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.
