Following a recent legal settlement with the City of Chicago, Jussie Smollett has committed to donating $50,000 to charity. This decision coincided with the dismissal of a lawsuit against him that stemmed from claims surrounding a controversial incident in January 2019.
In a detailed statement provided to media outlets, Smollett expressed his thoughts, stating, “Over six years ago, when it was reported that I had been attacked, city officials aimed to persuade the public that I intentionally orchestrated this incident. This flawed narrative has tarnished my reputation, and its effects will linger. These officials sought financial gain and insisted on a confession for something I did not commit.”
Smollett’s decision to settle was not made lightly. He explained that settling the civil suit was straightforward once he was presented with the option to make a charitable donation in place of paying the city. He clarified, “Today, it should be evident… They have received neither my funds nor my confession.”
Smollett, an actor known for his role on the television show “Empire,” reported being the target of a racially charged and homophobic assault by two masked individuals in early 2019. However, an investigation concluded that he had fabricated this story, leading to his conviction in 2021. Nevertheless, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned this conviction in November 2024, further complicating the narrative surrounding his situation.
In 2019, the City of Chicago initiated a lawsuit against Smollett to recover expenses incurred during the investigation of his reported assault. Despite the political tumult surrounding this incident, Smollett conveyed his enduring affection for the city, stating, “I still hold a special place in my heart for the city. Making a donation to help Chicago communities, often overlooked by those in positions of authority, aligns with my values.”
As part of his settlement, Smollett disclosed that he has directed funds to the Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts, a local nonprofit dedicated to fostering creativity and self-expression among Chicago’s youth. He remarked, “This organization was my choice, and I find comfort in knowing that at least one positive outcome has arisen from this experience.”
In addition to the initial donation, Smollett pledged an extra $10,000 to the Chicago Torture Justice Center. This organization seeks to provide resources to communities affected by violence linked to the Chicago Police Department. Smollett elaborated on his motivation, saying, “For anyone who has faced the challenge of proving they have been harmed, I stand in solidarity with you.”
Despite the favorable dismissal of his civil case and the vacating of his criminal conviction, Smollett acknowledged the lingering skepticism regarding his character. He noted, “I recognize that my acquittal will not alter the perceptions held by some individuals about me or the events surrounding my alleged attack. Yet, I maintain my innocence in both divine and legal contexts.”
Smollett is now focused on moving forward with his career. He stated, “I will continue to create art, advocate for important causes, and defend my integrity and family legacy with the truth.”
In a statement regarding the settlement, the legal representation for the City of Chicago conveyed their belief that this agreement offers a fair and constructive conclusion. This will allow all parties involved to effectively close this chapter and begin anew.
The legal saga surrounding Smollett began in March 2019 when criminal charges against him were unexpectedly dropped shortly after his arrest. Later, after a special prosecutor revived the investigation, Smollett faced multiple felony charges, resulting in his conviction on five counts in December 2021 and a subsequent sentence to 150 days in jail.
However, the turning point came in November 2024, when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the circumstances surrounding Smollett’s retrial constituted a violation of his due process rights. Mark Geragos, Smollett’s attorney, noted, “Today we answer a crucial question regarding the obligation of the state to uphold agreements made with defendants. A second prosecution in this context is an infringement of due process, leading to the reversal of the conviction.”
Another attorney for Smollett, Nenye Uche, underscored the nature of the original case. He asserted, “This was not a factual prosecution but rather a retaliatory persecution, and such actions have no place in our judicial system. We are grateful that the rule of law prevailed in this instance.”
As the legal disputes come to an end, Smollett emphasizes his commitment to moving on with his life and career, taking these lessons into the next chapter. His recent charitable donations demonstrate a willingness to contribute positively to the community, signaling a desire to heal and foster growth in an environment that he holds dear.
