Justin Rose is determined to focus on winning the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island this week, yet he admits he remains haunted by the events at Augusta National Golf Club from the previous weekend.
Rose found himself in a strong position for his first Masters win, completing the final hole with a deep birdie putt to finish at 11-under par, applying pressure on rival Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy struggled on the 18th green, missing a crucial par putt that would have forced a playoff. Rose experienced a similar situation in 2017 when he faced off against Sergio Garcia, and once again, the outcome did not favor him.
In a heartbreaking turn, McIlroy bested Rose on the playoff hole, achieving a career Grand Slam by clinching the 89th edition of the prestigious tournament.
During a press conference Wednesday at the RBC Heritage, Rose reflected on his recent experience.
“There has been a lot of support from people with positive comments coming my way, so I’m trying to absorb that while also wishing for different messages on my phone,” he shared.
Rose’s demeanor in defeat mirrored the grace he demonstrated four years ago when he lost to Garcia. Their playoff encounter in 2017 ended with a heartfelt embrace, recognizing the significance of the moment for both competitors.
Upon securing his victory, McIlroy rose from his knees and approached Rose for a warm hug, acknowledging how monumental the win was for McIlroy’s legacy as a golfer. This moment was not lost on Rose, who understood how deeply fulfilling this victory was for his fellow competitor. It marked Rose’s 20th Masters appearance without obtaining the coveted green jacket.
In prior attempts, Rose had come close to winning. After executing a remarkable birdie on the final hole, he seemed to be in position to claim the jacket.
On the playoff hole, he placed pressure on McIlroy, with an impressive drive landing in the fairway and a strong approach shot offering a birdie chance. However, McIlroy responded with an equally extraordinary drive, landing his approach within two feet of the hole. While Rose aimed for a birdie, his putt veered right, resulting in a tap-in par. McIlroy capitalized, securing his win this time around.
“I can’t quite find the right word,” Rose remarked about his Masters week. “Tormented might be close, reflecting on what could have been.”
Despite the ache of defeat, Rose’s professional golf career shows no signs of slowing down. As he approaches his 45th birthday in July, his aspirations for winning a green jacket remain alive.
Looking forward, Rose prepares to compete at Harbour Town Golf Links in the RBC Heritage, boasting a substantial purse of $20 million. This tournament provides Rose an opportunity to recover and compete fiercely.
In addition to the RBC Heritage, Rose’s sights are set on the upcoming PGA Championship, a major he seeks to conquer at Quail Hollow next month, yet another significant title that has eluded him.
