Former Vice President Kamala Harris marked her return to the campaign trail on Tuesday with a surprise appearance alongside democratic congressional candidate Aftyn Behn. This event in Tennessee signifies Harris’s first public engagement since her loss in the 2024 presidential election.
The launch of Behn’s canvassing campaign took place after Harris visited Fisk University, a historically Black college, and just before she hosted a book event for her memoir “107 Days” at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Her decision to support Behn highlights a renewed interest from Democrats eager to influence the ruby-red landscapes of Tennessee.
Harris’s event is particularly noteworthy because it is her first effort to support a candidate since her defeat to President Donald Trump last year. Her appearance comes at a time when Democrats are invigorated by recent gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey. However, winning in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District has proven to be an elusive goal for the party, as it has not had a Democratic representative in decades.
Republican National Committee spokesperson Delanie Bomar responded to Harris’s appearance by asserting that Republicans were confident in their chances for the upcoming election. She remarked that Tennessee, referred to as Trump country, was not a welcoming environment for Behn, whom she dubbed the AOC of Tennessee.
During her address at the gathering in Nashville’s Hadley Park, Harris stated that she was there because she recognized that power lies in the South. Although she did not directly mention Behn’s name during her speech, she called for the crowd to mobilize and ensure their voices are heard.
This engagement is part of a broader strategy by Democrats to reclaim notice in regions traditionally dominated by Republicans. Earlier this month, Harris participated in a rally for redistricting efforts in her home state of California, where Governor Gavin Newsom initiated a special election aimed at countering Trump-aligned tactics to redraw congressional districts.
Behn has become known as a rising liberal figure, earning the moniker the AOC of Tennessee. Progressive campaigners, including former Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg, have expressed strong support for Behn and her vision. Hogg, who campaigned for Behn during a
