In her recently published memoir, former Vice President Kamala Harris shares how she sought guidance from Bill and Hillary Clinton while selecting a running mate for her presidential campaign. The memoir, titled “107 Days,” provides insight into the pressures that Harris faced just weeks before the pivotal 2024 election.
The book, released on September 23, outlines the intense period leading up to a critical decision that could shape a candidate’s success. With only 94 days remaining until voters went to the polls, Harris turned to the Clintons for their seasoned advice.
According to Harris, she approached former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, with the hope of gaining insights into the complexities of running mate selection. Harris recounted, “Very few people have ever made this decision. I called Hillary and Bill because they understood the nuances and could provide me with honest, private counsel.”
Throughout their conversation, the Clintons stressed the importance of authenticity over appearances. They warned against choosing someone simply to create the illusion of a beneficial partnership. Harris recalled, “One of your strengths is that you bring joyful energy to the campaign. You need to select someone who won’t detract from that energy.”
Harris noted that Bill Clinton referred to his own relationship with Vice President Al Gore as a productive partnership. He emphasized the significance of their stark differences and how those contrasts complemented their teamwork. Harris reflected on this, saying, “He said Gore was a good match because he knew things I didn’t. We were as different as night and day, but it worked.Â
Furthermore, Bill Clinton advised her on the vetting process for potential candidates. He explained the necessity of honest dialogue and to pay close attention to how candidates respond. Harris stated, “You have to be upfront with them and observe their reactions.”
The Clintons highlighted another critical factor: the weight of the role. Harris recounted their joint message about the responsibility she would hand to her running mate. They both insisted that the prospective candidate should understand they are accepting a significant opportunity, one that might require personal sacrifice while managing both the pressures of the campaign and public life. Harris articulated this sentiment by noting, “If they are looking for immediate public recognition, this might not be the job for them. They may need to endure considerable challenges.”
Ultimately, Harris selected Tim Walz, the less-known Democratic governor of Minnesota, as her running mate. His background as a former U.S. House representative contributed to his selection, and he was regarded as Harris’s “happy warrior” on the campaign trail. Harris weighed the decision carefully, summarizing her choice by stating, “I needed to know that my running mate would value the dignity of everyone and demonstrate that through actions.” Interestingly, she did not mention whether she proposed Walz to the Clintons directly during their discussions.
The decision to partner with Walz rather than more prominent Democrats has drawn criticism. Observers believed choosing Walz contributed to the party’s defeat by Donald Trump, particularly after his campaign faced controversies related to “stolen valor” and strict pandemic rules. Many pointed to Walz’s debate performance as a factor in his perceived unease during critical moments, adding to the challenges the campaign faced.
Throughout her memoir, Harris refers to the Clintons repeatedly, illustrating an increasingly strong political alliance as she navigates her relationship with President Biden. As her book gained attention, Harris emphasized the importance of mentoring in politics, stating, “We all hope to have support from those who have come before us. Sometimes that happens, and sometimes it doesn’t.”
At a recent book tour event in New York City, Harris praised Hillary Clinton for her dedication to empowering others. She stated, “Hillary believes in lifting people up and providing support.” Such comments reflect Harris’s strategic positioning within her party as she seeks to differentiate from Biden’s growing influence.
During her New York book event, Harris reminisced about a cheerful conversation she had with the Clintons after Biden announced his withdrawal from the race on July 21, 2024. “I know their home phone number, and I called Hillary. She said, ‘It’s Kamala on the phone. Bill, pick up the other phone,’” she recalled, illustrating the light-hearted bond they share. Both Clintons expressed eagerness to support her campaign, with Hillary even suggesting to take an Amtrak train to join the campaign trail.
As Harris’s alliance with the Clintons solidifies, tensions have surfaced concerning remarks she made about Biden. Allies of the current president expressed concern over Harris’s critiques, which include suggestions that Biden should reconsider his decision to seek re-election as well as feedback on his debate performance against Trump.
In light of these challenges and her burgeoning relationship with the Clintons, Harris aims to carve out her own identity while continuing to navigate the complexities of party dynamics.
