Karen Read’s Trial: Jury Selection Reveals Strong Opinions Among Potential Jurors

Jury selection began on Tuesday for the highly-anticipated second trial of Karen Read, who faces charges including murder linked to the tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, during a blizzard in January 2022.

The 45-year-old’s initial trial concluded with a hung jury, prompting the judge to dismiss several motions for case dismissal thereafter.

Juror Opinions Challenge Selection Process

This time, nearly half of the jurors in the initial selection group expressed pre-existing opinions regarding the case. This revelation significantly impacts the jury selection process and casts a shadow on the trial’s judicial integrity.

Read arrived at court around 8:55 a.m. on Tuesday, dressed in a gray pantsuit and carrying a water bottle. She flashed a thumbs-up gesture to supporters who welcomed her on the courthouse steps.

Inside the courtroom, her skilled legal team is set to face a special prosecutor known for previously defending the infamous mobster, Whitey Bulger.

Potential Bias Among Jurors

Judge Beverly Cannone addressed over 90 potential jurors, outlining the charges against Read before initiating a closed questioning session. In an open session, 76 participants admitted they had heard about the case, while 40 of them indicated they had formed opinions. Additionally, 16 jurors reported having biases favoring either the defense or the prosecution.

Two jurors expressed that they would struggle to adhere to the judge’s instructions concerning the burden of proof, reasonable doubt, and the presumption of innocence that Read is entitled to. Furthermore, 36 jurors stated that serving on the jury for an extended duration would impose considerable hardship on their lives.

The Trial Timeline

The selection process is anticipated to take several days, with the trial itself slated to span six to eight weeks, as noted by Judge Cannone. Preparations are underway as both sides gear up for what promises to be a complex and lengthy legal battle.

The Charges Against Karen Read

Read faces multiple serious charges, including second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident concerning O’Keefe’s death on January 29, 2022. O’Keefe, 46 at the time of his demise, was discovered in the snow outside the residence of another police officer, shortly after a gathering involving alcohol consumption.

A nor’easter struck the area that night, leading to an autopsy that revealed O’Keefe died from head trauma and hypothermia. However, the medical examiner classified the manner of death as
