On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed recent actions by Democrats regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports. During a news briefing, she expressed her disappointment with the party’s approach to an issue that has sparked significant debate among the public.
Leavitt highlighted polling data indicating that a considerable portion of Americans opposes the participation of transgender women in women’s sports. She emphasized that this disagreement contradicts the Democratic Party’s branding as the party of women, stating, “You cannot identify as the party of women and simultaneously support the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports while neglecting fundamental issues of law and order and immigration reform that will safeguard women in this country.”
President Donald Trump earlier addressed the topic during his recent speech, where he honored Payton McNabb, a former girls’ volleyball player. McNabb has suffered severe injuries from a collision with a transgender athlete during a 2022 match. Trump shared her story with the audience and proclaimed his intent to cut federal funding to institutions supporting trans athlete participation.
Notably, applause followed Trump’s comments from Republican lawmakers, while Democrats remained seated, not responding to McNabb’s narrative.
In a moment highlighting the conflicting narratives, several Democrat congresswomen donned pink attire during Trump’s joint address, in what seemed to showcase support for women. Yet, Leavitt pointed out the irony in their silence when McNabb’s story was shared. She remarked, “The message to Americans should be clear. The president intends to advocate for what is right, while it is ironic for Democrat women to wear pink to express solidarity with women yet remain silent for a woman who almost lost her life and endured debilitating injuries due to a male competitor on the court.”
McNabb herself shared her feelings about the lack of response from the opposing party, calling it “heartbreaking.” She added that the failure to pass legislation supporting women’s sports reflects a broader lack of concern for female athletes’ safety. In her words, “It is distressing that even those who have daughters chose this as their battleground, refusing to recognize the stories of countless female athletes who face similar dilemmas.”
Several Democrat governors across the nation are resisting efforts to enforce policies aimed at keeping biological males out of women’s sports. This pushback has attracted the attention of the Department of Education, which is currently investigating states like Maine, California, Minnesota, and Massachusetts for potential violations of Title IX. These states are under scrutiny for instructing schools to defy federal mandates while permitting transgender athletes to compete alongside girls.
Leavitt reiterated Trump’s commitment to holding states accountable for allowing these practices, describing such policies as an affront to taxpayer interests. She stated, “This stance represents a commonsense approach. A clear majority of the American public, including about 60% of Democrats, agrees that allowing men in women’s sports undermines the integrity of female athletic competition.”
A recent survey from The New York Times conducted by Ipsos revealed that a significant majority of Americans—including a majority of Democrats—believe that transgender athletes should not compete in women’s sports. Of the 2,128 participants in the survey, 79% opposed allowing biological males who identify as women from participating in female sports categories. Among those identifying as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% indicated they believe trans athletes do not belong in women’s competitions.
Activist Riley Gaines has committed to campaigning against lawmakers who opposed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, gearing up for the upcoming midterm elections in 2026. Gaines revealed that in private discussions, several Democratic senators discreetly acknowledged their personal opposition to allowing men to compete against women in sports. However, they seem to adopt various justifications for their public stances.
As these debates continue to unfold, Leavitt’s remarks encapsulate a growing divide that resonates not only within political corridors but also among constituents concerned about the implications of policy decisions on women’s athletics. The administration appears poised to retain its hardline stance against trans participation in girls’ and women’s sports, framing it as a matter of fairness and safety.
Attention will remain on how this issue progresses, especially in the context of ongoing investigations and potential policy shifts at both state and federal levels. The discourse surrounding transgender athletes continues to evolve, underscoring the significant cultural and political implications involved in the protection of women’s sports and the rights of all athletes.
