Kate Fagan Advocates for Transgender Athletes in Final Appearance on ESPN’s ‘Around the Horn’

winner,’ earning the opportunity to deliver a monologue. With the program serving as her final platform, she chose to advocate for transgender athletes, stating, ‘trans kids deserve to play sports.

Fagan shared her reflections on the joy of sports. ‘Think about what you remember from your time playing sports. Ninety-nine percent of it is finding that jersey for the first time, your favorite number, community, joy, and those high-fives,’ she explained. ‘It’s that moment when you have a great play with a teammate. It’s the feeling of belonging. And it does not know gender. Trans kids deserve the same as everyone else does.’

She articulated the importance of sports in fostering joy and humanity, emphasizing, ‘The more people who have that, the better.’

While no law currently prohibits transgender children from participating in sports, legislative efforts across the country have sought to restrict their involvement. Notably, an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in February 2020 prevented biological males from competing against biological females in sports.

The news surrounding the cancellation of ‘Around the Horn’ became public in March. Former panelist Jay Mariotti later expressed his belief that the decision stemmed from the show’s shift towards more progressive narratives. Mariotti noted, ‘I think what John Skipper wanted from some of the shows was he started to install people on the shows who became anti-Trump.’

In a recent post on his Substack, Mariotti commented, ‘Around the Horn ended a long time ago — when I left the show.’ He criticized the show’s panelists, suggesting that some have embraced ‘woke’ ideologies while others are disengaged.

With just 11 episodes remaining, this acclaimed show, which has run for over two decades, is nearing its end. Kate Fagan’s final message resonates as a poignant reminder of inclusion and equality in sports.
