Keith Urban is openly discussing the critical turning point in his long struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. In a recent appearance on the popular podcast ‘The Zane Lowe Show,’ the 57-year-old country music artist reflected on a pivotal moment that ultimately shaped his future.
Urban recalled a voice that persisted through his years of substance abuse, warning him of an impending choice he would eventually face. He shared, ‘All through the years of drinking and doing drugs, I always had this very specific voice inside of me that goes, “One day, you’re gonna come to a crossroads. It’ll be the final one.”‘
This internal dialogue warned Urban he would have to choose between his destructive habits or risk never finding a way out. ‘You either gonna choose to get out of this mess or you’re never gonna get out of it,’ Urban recounted, emphasizing the urgency of that voice.
This journey toward recovery significantly accelerated after his wife, Nicole Kidman, initiated an intervention shortly after their marriage in 2006. Urban poignantly remarked, ‘I knew that was it. I’m like, ‘Oh, this is that fork in the road.’’
Now nearly 19 years sober, Urban expressed relief at having finally extricated himself from the grasp of addiction. ‘I didn’t come to America for that. I came to America to make music and grow as an artist and as a human being,’ he stated. Urban clarified that his ambitions were focused on touring, recording, and evolving creatively, not ending up in rehabilitation centers.
Despite his determined vision, Urban admitted that the journey was fraught with challenges and setbacks. He transparently shared how a painful breakup fueled his descent into addiction, stating, ‘The novelty of you has worn off’ from someone close to him had deeply affected his self-esteem. This comment cut to the core and marked a downward spiral into increased substance use.
After years of obscurity, Urban’s career took off with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1999, which boasted several chart-topping hits. However, the taste of fame did not assuage his inner demons. He recounted feeling like an outsider within Nashville’s country music scene, battling insecurities and past traumas linked to his father’s alcoholism.
At the time, Urban was in denial about his struggles with addiction, attributing it to his father’s behaviors. ‘It took me a long time to get sober,’ he admitted. ‘I didn’t drink like my dad, so I compared everything to him.’ Urban detailed how this comparison prolonged his denial, impacting both his professional career and personal life.
After several tumultuous years, Urban’s marriage to Kidman became a decisive factor in his journey toward sobriety. With encouragement from Kidman, he entered rehab shortly after their wedding, realizing that failing to confront his addiction would cost him the love of his life. ‘I knew I would lose her if I didn’t change,’ he confessed during an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010.
Urban vividly detailed the moment of realization, saying, ‘It was literally like, ‘You either get this right now, or you are never going to get it right.’ This epiphany transformed his outlook, enabling him to embark on a path toward healing.
Urban remarked on how his relationship with Kidman acted as a spiritual awakening, describing his experience as being ‘born into her.’ He acknowledged that her unwavering support helped him shake off the destructive shackles of addiction. With a renewed sense of hope and purpose, Urban began to embrace life as a sober man.
Today, the couple celebrates nearly 19 years of marriage and is the proud parents of two daughters, Sunday and Faith. Urban often talks about how family remains a top priority, helping him maintain a balanced life.
Since achieving sobriety, Urban has turned his attention to helping fellow musicians struggling with addiction. Notably, country artist Brantley Gilbert recalled how Urban impacted his life while battling similar demons. Their encounter catalyzed a significant shift in Gilbert’s perspective on addiction.
Gilbert had faced debilitating addiction issues, and Urban’s candid discussion about overcoming his struggles resonated deeply. Gilbert emphasized that Urban’s influence likely saved his life, stating, ‘If it weren’t for him, I don’t know if I’d be sober or in this business anymore.’
In a recent interview, Urban explored the creative process behind his latest album titled ‘High.’ Urban defined ‘high’ in multifaceted terms, expressing that what brings joy and fulfillment varies for everyone. ‘For me, it’s my family, my friends, and this rollercoaster musical journey I’m on,’ he shared, reiterating the importance of his music and family in achieving personal happiness.
While addressing the challenges of substance addiction, Urban acknowledged that performing has always remained a safe haven. ‘That was always my happy place,’ he concluded, affirming that sharing his musical talent on stage is among the most rewarding experiences of his life.
As Keith Urban approaches two decades of sobriety, he continues to inspire those around him with his story of resilience. By openly sharing his experiences, he raises awareness about addiction and illustrates the transformative power of love and support in recovery. With each new chapter in his life, Urban appears committed to embracing not only his artistic journey but also the message that recovery and personal growth are possible for everyone.
