The Kennedy Center is embarking on a significant transformation of its family programming, aiming to include more faith-based content that has often been overlooked in its offerings. This strategic shift reflects a desire to create a more inclusive environment for families seeking wholesome entertainment options.
As part of this initiative, the Kennedy Center will host a complimentary screening of the new animated feature from Angel Studios titled “The King of Kings.” This film presents the life of Jesus through the eyes of a young boy who learns about the profound impact of faith.
The screening is scheduled for Sunday, June 1, and signifies a new direction toward featuring more pro-Christian narratives within the renowned venue. The Kennedy Center has recognized a growing demand for such content, which aligns with family values and resonates with audiences.
Previously, the only notable modern production with a Christian theme was a 2022 performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Initially met with mixed reviews, this classic musical sparked debates about its portrayal of biblical narratives, particularly among influential figures such as the late Rev. Billy Graham, who questioned its suitability.
Ambassador Richard Grenell, President of the Kennedy Center, expressed his enthusiasm for showcasing the film, citing the marketing campaign as a catalyst for the decision. He noted, “When I saw the advertising campaign for ‘King of Kings,’ I immediately knew we needed to have it come to the Kennedy Center. And then coincidentally, I was asked to be on a panel with the CEO of Angel Studios, so I cornered him. This is family-friendly programming that we will be doing more of in the future.”

He stated, “But its greatest achievement is in the hearts it’s moved—and its screening at the Kennedy Center is a symbol of just how far truth and light can travel.”
Since its release last month, “The King of Kings” has already made a notable impact at the box office, bringing in $19.3 million during its opening weekend alone. This impressive financial performance underscores the film’s widespread appeal and the growing audience for faith-based cinema.
