Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have opened up about their parenting choices, focusing on how they shielded their children from the often bizarre lifestyle associated with fame. Despite dedicating years to their successful careers in Hollywood, the couple made a conscious decision to protect their kids from the whims of celebrity culture.
At 66, Bacon recently discussed his approach to family life in a preview for the upcoming episode of “Last Meals,” emphasizing that his children did not consent to live in the limelight. He commented that they did not want to expose their kids to the lifestyle that comes with his fame.
He stated, “When it came to promoting my own fame and taking my kids to premieres and making them watch my movies and showing them an article in the paper…we really didn’t do that. We really avoided it. I think we really felt like it would be nice for them to have some…we knew how weird this life was.” This sentiment highlights the couple’s determination to prioritize their children’s well-being over personal accolades.
Bacon reflected on the paradoxical nature of fame, acknowledging the cool factor while expressing the complexities it introduces to family life. He said, “When you realize that you will always…that there’s always a chance that you’re gonna walk out of the house and somebody is going to know who you are or look at you or have some kind of point of you about you from a piece of work that you’ve done, you start to go, ‘Okay, it’s great. This is what I always wanted, but it’s a weird way to live. 99% good, but a little weird.'”
Bacon and Sedgwick’s relationship began in 1988 when they met on the set of the play “Lemon Sky.” During her appearance on “Conan” back in 2012, Sedgwick shared how their romance blossomed. She recalled how Bacon would invite the entire cast to dinner in hopes that she would join, though she never attended. Instead, Bacon resorted to suggesting an outing after he offered her a massage at his hotel. Their story has been both charming and unique, illustrating the strong bond they built over time.
The couple is now proud parents to two adult children, Travis, who is 35, and Sosie, who is 33. While they have remained relatively private, their parents’ fame has undoubtedly shaped their experiences growing up.
Bacon made his mark in Hollywood at the young age of 19, landing his first big role in “National Lampoon’s Animal House.” This was quickly followed by another significant part in the horror classic “Friday the 13th.” Through the years, he built an impressive filmography that includes notable titles like “Footloose,” “Tremors,” and “Mystic River,” each showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Despite his extensive career, Bacon took on the responsibility of ensuring that his children were not burdened by the effects of their father’s profession. He stated, “That’s the thing. When it comes to fame, I’ve nobody to blame but myself. It was my thing. I’m the one that fought tooth and nail for it. But for them, it’s something that’s thrust upon them.” It’s a thoughtful perspective that highlights the complexities of parental roles amid public scrutiny.
Bacon emphasized the importance of communication within their family as they navigated the complexities of fame. He encouraged his children to express their feelings and experiences growing up under a spotlight. He added, “I keep telling them, ‘It had to have been hard for you. Please, tell me. I want to know. Sit with your therapist, it’s okay.'” This approach showcases a proactive parenting style aimed at fostering emotional health and transparency.
As adults, Travis and Sosie have started to make their own decisions regarding public appearances. They joined their parents on the red carpet at the premiere of “MaXXXine” in June, demonstrating a newfound willingness to engage with fans and media. The family presented a united front at the TCL Chinese Theatre in California, showing off a mix of styles from all-black ensembles to vibrant colors.
At the premiere, Bacon donned a pale orange suit paired with a beige button-down shirt. Sedgwick opted for a stylish black leather mini dress with sheer tights, while Travis wore an all-black outfit to complement his famous parents. Sosie opted for an oversized look that included cowboy boots, reflecting her unique sense of style.
Although they have emerged occasionally into public life, Bacon and Sedgwick have instilled values in their children that promote independence and confidence. Travis further demonstrated this ethos by accompanying his parents to the premiere of “The Bondsman” earlier this year.
Bacon’s thoughtful approach to parenting amid the glitz and glamor of Hollywood serves as a reminder that celebrity life comes with its own set of challenges. The success of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick lies not only in their flourishing careers but also in their commitment to nurturing their children’s well-being away from the pressures of celebrity culture.
