Actor Kevin Sorbo believes he became the first casualty of cancel culture in Hollywood, a decade ago, due to his conservative beliefs. Many will recognize the 66-year-old actor from his portrayal of the Greek demigod Hercules in the successful television series “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” which captivated audiences from 1995 to 1999.

“I was the first cancel culture victim before I even knew the term existed. Hollywood cut ties with me around 2009 for sharing my views online. At the time, I questioned, ‘Is it problematic to speak the truth?’ This backlash stems from a disdain for both the truth and anyone who identifies as conservative or Christian in the industry. I feel like a pariah, almost like kryptonite to them,” Sorbo stated.
Sorbo’s New Studio and Ventures
In response to these challenges, Sorbo and his wife launched their production company, Sorbo Studios. He has managed to create at least four films annually since distancing himself from the traditional Hollywood system.
“I accept the situation, albeit reluctantly. The landscape is definitely evolving, especially with Trump potentially returning to the White House. People may outwardly oppose him, yet they will witness improvements in their lives. The tide is turning in Hollywood; I’ve received calls from studios expressing interest in my scripts,” Sorbo explained.
He remarked that he is exploring opportunities with platforms like Netflix and Amazon. His films focus on incorporating positive messages related to faith without being overtly preachy. He believes that audiences are ready for narratives that inspire rather than discourage.
Hollywood’s Compulsion to Adapt
Sorbo discussed the reasons behind Hollywood’s newfound flexibility. “Many are growing weary of failed projects and financial losses, as illustrated by the costly debacle of the recent Disney film ‘Snow White’. The American public has expressed their dissatisfaction, evident in voting patterns in the last election, and I believe we’re experiencing a shift back towards traditional values,” he asserted.
He describes this transition as the ebb and flow of societal perspectives, suggesting a swing back to more conventional viewpoints. In his view, this rebalance is long overdue.
A Milestone Celebration for ‘What If…’
In a nod to his past work, Sorbo’s film “What If…” originally released in 2010, is set to return to theaters to honor its 15-year anniversary. The film features Sorbo alongside actors Kristy Swanson, John Ratzenberger, and Debby Ryan.
The plot revolves around Ben Walker, portrayed by Sorbo, a businessman who has drifted away from his faith. In a dramatic twist, he wakes up to find himself living the life he was meant to lead, happily married and serving as a pastor in a small town.
Sorbo emphasized the ongoing relevance of the film’s message, stating, “Its themes resonate today just as powerfully as ever, illustrating the void left by today’s Hollywood films. They are lacking the elements of hope, love, and redemption that audiences yearn for.”
He added that Hollywood previously thrived on such narratives and seems to gradually acknowledge its misplaced direction, especially as financial losses continue to mount.
