One of the most noteworthy figures in the Democratic Party’s potential 2028 lineup will lend support to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger this Sunday.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a rising star who has carved out a position distinct from far-left Democratic leaders such as New York Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, is set to campaign alongside Spanberger in the critical Hampton Roads area.
Spanberger, the former congresswoman of Virginia, plans a series of rallies in the Tidewater area leading up to Election Day. Notably, she will host an event with former President Barack Obama in Norfolk, underscoring the significance of this key region.
According to Shapiro’s campaign spokesman, Manuel Bonder, “Governor Shapiro this weekend will travel to New Jersey and Virginia to assist in the election of Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger, two Democratic leaders who consistently prioritize delivering results for hardworking families and safeguarding freedoms within their states.”
In addition to campaigning for Spanberger, Shapiro will also support Representative Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey where she is striving to retain control of Trenton for the Democrats.
Shapiro, who has confirmed his intention to run for reelection in Harrisburg in 2026, has not yet declared any interest in a presidential bid. However, he remains a frequently mentioned name among Democrats speculated to seek higher office. His counterparts include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Kentucky Governor Andrew Beshear.
Shapiro was also identified as a potential runner-up to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in the 2024 vice-presidential selection process for Kamala Harris.
Recently, Shapiro has taken a strong stance against antisemitism. He specifically criticized antisemitic actions at the University of Pennsylvania following the Hamas attack on Israel. In a separate statement, he expressed concern over Mamdani’s remarks regarding the Jewish state, stating, “You must speak and act with moral clarity. When your supporters express overtly antisemitic sentiments, it is critical to address those comments head-on and not allow them to linger unanswered.”
Despite Shapiro’s criticism of the handling of antisemitic sentiments within his party, the Governor has faced scrutiny from Republicans back in Pennsylvania regarding former Governor Tom Wolf’s COVID-19 restrictions and the ongoing budget issues in the state. Nevertheless, he has garnered some bipartisan praise.
In the competitive New Jersey political landscape, particularly during the governor’s race, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli referenced Shapiro in a favorable light. This drew the attention of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who jokingly suggested Ciattarelli should consider running for office in Pennsylvania instead of New Jersey.
Ciattarelli stated, “Pennsylvania doesn’t experience the same property tax crisis as New Jersey, nor do they face a business climate crisis or energy crisis.” His remarks illustrate the contrasting political climates between neighboring states.
However, some Pennsylvania Republicans have contested these characterizations. State Representative Russ Diamond and State Senator David Argall have recently introduced measures aimed at eliminating property taxes entirely, highlighting divergent views on fiscal policy.
State Senator Doug Mastriano, who previously challenged Shapiro in the 2022 election and is also considered a potential candidate for 2026, has been critical of Shapiro’s budgetary proposals. Mastriano labeled them as unrealistic, warning that “the funds from ‘we the people’ will eventually run dry” if accountability in spending is not enforced.
Shapiro has also made headlines for his vocal stance regarding election law. He recently rebuked former President Trump over a post on Truth Social, which suggested a potential end to mail-in voting. Shapiro stated, “Donald Trump can issue whatever executive orders he desires, but he cannot unilaterally alter the Constitution. The states hold the authority to establish our election regulations as mandated by the Constitution.”
