American college campuses are increasingly recognized as battlegrounds of ideology, where civil discussions are often drowned out by partisan influence. This climate forces both students and faculty to reconsider voicing unconventional perspectives. In response to this troubling trend, Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, is initiating a change with a fresh approach.
Khan has introduced a new college admissions tool called Dialogues, now accepted by numerous prestigious universities such as Columbia, MIT, and the University of Chicago. This innovative program, available on the tutoring platform Schoolhouse.world, allows students to engage in recorded conversations about contentious issues, including abortion, immigration, and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Participants in Dialogues exchange feedback on their conversations, focusing on qualities like empathy and listening skills. This feedback forms part of a portfolio that students can submit with their college applications. The grading system encourages traits such as being empathetic, curious, seeking common ground, and being a good listener. Applicants can choose which peer evaluations to share with colleges as supplementing material for their applications.
Khan articulated his concerns about the campus climate, noting that it has increasingly tilted to the left in recent years. He shared his observations in an interview, stating that many individuals would acknowledge a growing intolerance for conservative and even moderate viewpoints. This shift has heightened the pressure on students to self-censor, which Khan recognized as pervasive even before they step onto a campus.
