This recent spectacle, the 23rd episode of precursory activity, commenced late last week with sightings of low-level spattering accompanied by flames.
According to officials from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, small lava fountains and lava overflows were first reported from the north vent around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The excitement surrounding Kīlauea’s activity drew considerable public interest, as the National Park Service indicated that sustained fountaining was expected to continue through the weekend.

This monitoring indicates that pressure buildup creates an inflationary tilt, leading up to a lava fountaining episode. Once the lava begins to fountain, the release of pressure prompts a transition to a deflationary tilt. This cyclical pattern generates a saw-tooth shape in ground tilt records observed over recent months.
Remarkably, although these fluctuations occur, the summit has shown minimal change in pressurization since the eruption’s initiation on December 23, 2024. This information provides crucial insights for scientists studying volcanic behavior and the potential impacts on the surrounding environment.
